how tall is too tall for an internal cage?

Im 6'3, i would like to build an internal in my 90' blazer but want to make sure im not smashing my head on the bars after every damn bump!!:D

Just don't put bars RIGHT above your head.
 
These are within 1/4" of the hardtop, and if they were directly over my head I wouldn't have been able to drive it with a helmet...

I'm 6' 1"... there's no way in the world I would have the bars near my head... my seats are sitting up reasonable, but still, I didn't want one within say, a foot of my head.. directly overhead, it would have been inches...

Pretty sure SCORE regs are 3" of headspace in any direction. Granted, thats considering you're wearing a helmet and neck restraints are recommended, but it gives you a reference point.

If you're too tight, lower your seat in to the tubes. One thing that has been brought up since TG's KOH wreck is that a lot of us mount our seats so were sitting up straight with good posture. You should actually be laying back in to the seat so that your hips take some of the force in a wreck instead of your nuts :doah:. Leaning the seat back a few degrees should also give you some headspace.

good point! I didnt really want to exo the thing anyway.... its already wide enough!
 
All cages are compromises, I built a cage in a pickup that cleared a guy that was 6'4" tall, with the stock bench seat, but I personally would never want a multiple hard rollover in that truck.

I have cut bars into the roof structure to get them out of the way, made the tubes (overhead) unsymmetrical to get a bar out of the way of a drivers head but retain structure. Lots of stuff.

And yes most any rulebook of a sanctioning body requires that the cage be no closer to the helmet than 3", some allow 2.5" but the cage has to be padded with SFI approved roll bar padding.

If you are using stock seatbelts 4" is a better number, but like I said every cage is a compromise
 
It was an issue in my truck so i ended up using smaller diameter chromoly tubing for the members in the front cab and bent them to stay as tight to the top of the cab as possible.
