How the hell did this happen?

I just came back from my noon hour with my k30 and lost my power steering. I looked before going back to work and I broke the end out of my steering box. How does that happen? Did I push it against the steering stops one too many times?

I looked today and the end of the casting behind the big dome on the end just split open. I wasn't even wheeling just driving.

My 78 did the same thing. Don't know what caused it and it never happened again.
