Pro-topline heads are probably a better bet in most cases.
No matter what you want to do, the springs will handle the lift you want (within reason) the studs are screw in, the pushrod slots should be big (unlike Vortecs) and a few other things.
I never really got a clear picture of what the different pro-topline heads have to offer. The problem is that while Vortecs made some major changes to make the power they do, the other "small" changes (rail type rockers, no exhaust crossover, centerbolt valve covers, intake bolt pattern) end up causing other problems that can add cost quickly...DEPENDING on where you want to start and end up.
If you can get pro-toplines with the fast burn style combustion chamber, exhaust crossover if required for emissions, and improved intake runners, with a "standard" intake bolt pattern, I think they would be a better deal.
Unfortunately, it's like buying a new car or computer. There are MANY good choices out there, but all have their up and downsides, just have to weigh all of them. Pro-toplines end up costing about as much as Vortecs, but if you buy the exact equivalent, the pro-toplines have better features.
