I know this seems simple, but sometimes these tasks can be a handful. What is the easiest way to change the pan gasket? any pitfalls to look out for?

get felpro 1 peice unit and check box for snap-up screws if non get a set.

drain oil.

remove any parts in your way and tranny dust shield for convorter or clutch.

remove pan bolts and pan.

clean seal surface on engine and pan.

install snap-ups at each corner.

snap oil pan gasket up threw bolt holes and its held in place with the snap-ups.

install pan same way .

then reassemble all back to orignal.

^^exactly^^

I just did this a couple days ago, and it was a breeze, even with the old saggy motor mounts. Didn't really help my leak though, I guess I need to change the rear main seal :doah:

Is that for sure where the leak is? Sometimes a valve cover, or intake gasket can look like a pan leak. Clean the engine with brake cleen and drive a bit to look for fresh oil.

I replaced my oil pan on my 87 jimmy last December...I stripped the drain plug and never could get those fixer drain plug bolts to seal.

The aluminum piece in front of tranny off along with both support rods and a few bolts on pass. side held the tranny lines had to be moved a little. I think I also had to loosen the oil lines off of the filter adapter. I did not remove the starter but would be better if I did. Should have used some sealer on the front and rear... rear leaks but less than the drain plug did. I bought a one piece rubber type gasket from summit $30.00. I did not use any gasket sealer but like I said I should have used it at least on the front and rear of the pan. Mines an 87 with 350..700 should be the same. ..one more thing.. there is a torque pattern to the pan bolts, should come w/gasket.

I bet your rear main seal is leaking. If you are going to go thru all that trouble you minds well change the rear main seal while you have the pan off. I would.

I think his year truck, he will have to remove the tranny if he tends to replace the real seal. that year might have the one piece rear seal.
