on my deisel, tell me it aint as easy as just hosing it down while the engines off and cold right? Anything special? Just dont wanna put water anywhere it shouldnt be.

Damnifiknow. Don't think I've ever done it. Every so often when I have to do some work under there, I try to schedule it right after I've crossed a couple of streams, and its not too bad.
I figure as long as it goes down the road, and over the trees, through the ditches and what have you, there must be a motor under all that gray stuff somewhere......

Well, just imagine what happens when you hit a deep puddle on the highway at speed, and don't do much more than that, and you should be fine.
In other words, unless you live in Iraq, your engine gets pretty well soaked on a regular basis.
Normal water pressure from a hose is not going to bother much as long as you don't spray it somewhere it normally would not go. Sticking the hose into the breather intake is frowned upon.
Since its a diesel, you don't even have to worry about getting the dist. or the plug wires wet.
Greater than normal pressure though is something else. Hit it with a 3000# pressure washer, and you are going to have problems.

Just made the connection. You're the guy who had the possible rear main leaking from sitting in the water.
Diesels are funny. How deep was the tailpipe? I would clean off all the outside oil, and drain the crank NOW. If you see any milky stuff in the oil, then you need to refill it with new oil, crank it and run if for a couple of minutes and then drain the oil again. Water is not as deadly as people think it is. I have run engines with water in the crankcase lots of times. Not on purpose, of course. Where the water does its main damage is after you turn the truck off. Then it causes the crank journals to rust ruining the bearings. While its being pumped through and mixing with the oil, it does not have time to really do bad things.
If the tailpipe was really deep, its possible that the back pressure caused the seal to leak. If you are going to do a flush with new oil, I would watch it and see if its still leaking now before you pull the pan.
The starter is probably ok. At least for now. If it has a bad on it, just take the band off and wash it out good with a hose. Turning it slightly to get any dirt out from under the brushes.
The probable probably is the solenoid. There is dirt inside where the contacts are and won't let them close. If you could get the end cap off, you could clean it out. But I'm not sure you can still do that on the newer ones. If you see a vent hole in the end, washing it out with a hose might get the dirt out if it has not embedded its self into the contacts when you tried to start it.
You may eventually have to replace the starter, because the grease in the bushings may have gotten washed out. But you should be able to make it work for now.
Remember, its already been under water. A hose will not hurt it now.

haha thanks, yeah, i guess i can take it off and try my best to clean it before i have it rebuilt or replaced. I checked the oil and didnt see any milky crap. Im about to be snowed in for a bit so im guessing the end of the week is when i can get it out. Im hoping its a bad cdr valve which im also going attemp to check/clean/replace thats causing the leak.

pressure wash the biatch and enjoy your clean engine! :waytogo:

I spray some Greased Lightning, let it sit for a few minutes, start the motor then spray away. If it stops I'll stop and see what I got wet. Just try to keep the spray out of the fan, you may get wet if you don't.

just put a plastic bag over the air cleaner and alternator then you can duesh it till its clean.

Spray it all down with simple green, let it sit for a few minutes, drive to the pressure washer, spray it down again and then start spraying.
