how to convert a 24 volt winch to 12 volt

i have a warn winch that was used on a hummer and need to know how to convert it from 24 volt to 12 volt. even if i have to swap motors i would still come out cheaper than buying a new winch.

from what i know about electricity, you can reduce voltage a helluvalot easier than increase voltage.. unless you figure something up that wires two batteries up to the winch alone, i think you'll have to get a new motor.. you could try shooting someone from the winch manufacturer and see if there's something you can remove/add to get the motor to run on 12 volts (as if it were made for 12 volts but they added a resistor or something to convert it to 24 volts)... just a thought.. good luck.

Easiest solution is to get a 12V motor. You *could* buy new from Warn ($$$ ) ... or look on Ebay for aftermarket replacement types.

I don't believe that the motor coils are seperable -- ideally we would have liked Warn to make two 12V circuits for each coil that can be wired in series for 24V or parallel for 12V.

You might take the motor to your local starter/alternator guy, and see if he can rewind it for 12V. I would actually prefer to have the original one rebuilt than buy an aftermarket one, as I don't trust them so much... but IIRC the real Warn parts are stupid $$, so an aftermarket would be easy/cheaper.

When I worked at warn, I worked in the department that built the military winches. The only way to convert them from 24V to 12V is to get a new motor.

The easy/cheap route. Buy two 12v batteries (dedicated to winch) and wire them up in series for 24volts.
