For a "Cargo" type trailer. Working on a "teardrop" type trailer. It has 3500lb axles and 2000lb springs, going to add some monroe RV shocks, but need to figure out which length to get.

Are the mounts already on the trailer? I have used 4" travel on most trailers. The springs do not have a whole lot of compression unless you really over load it. Are you looking at gas charged or just dampers? A picture of the trailer would help.

The trailer isnt built yet. Im having the shop that is making the frame add some tabs on the trailing side of the axle so I can add shocks. Once I get the trailer, I can just drill the frame and add upper shock mounts. So I can basically add any length I want, just determines where to put the mounts. But how do I determine length or better yet, where to put the upper shock mount. Im guessing I want the mount in a place that would put the shock right in the middle of its compression stock, so it has room to compress and expand. Right?

Not sure if it matters, but the trailer will be "Spring over axle" for extra lift.

10 degrees back angle. Axle travels back as spring compresses.

Jack the axle up. Measure length at mounts. Max load it, measure length. Go 1/2 inch longer on each end. 1 in longer over all in travel. You do not want the shock used as a limit strap or bump stop.

Perfect!! Thanks. that is what I was looking for. I wasnt sure about optimum angle til you mentioned it.
