my buddy has an 88 K1500. he snapped an axle shaft in the 10 bolt, so he's replacing it with a 14SF. no big deal there, except that the 10 bolt had 4.10 gears in it. i have yet to see a factory 10 bolt with 4.10s. how can he identify the front gears, to see if they're matching 4.10s or not? dont really want to have to pull the thing apart to find out, and the SPID label is useless, since its badly faded. with 4.10s out back, im not 100% sure it would be accurate anyways

Id have to agree Ive never seen a 10 bolt with 4.10's Anyways, I cant recall ever seeing a tag on my front diff. Id just turn the driveshaft and count tire revolutions...

Just curious, what's his RPO code?

Maybe unhook the front driveshaft, engage 4 wheel drive so it will lock the front in, then jack up one side and turn the tire and count how many times the pinion yoke goes around. Simply turning the driveshaft won't work because the front gears are only engaged in 4 wheel drive.

I've read that if you spin the tire 20 times and have a friend count the pinion yoke revs and then do the math it will be a lot more acurate. Example - turn the tire 20 times and the pinion goes around 82 times. 82/20=4.10

.

Since it is GU I would guess it came stock with 3.42 gears, GU6. The 3.73 and 4.10 gears were GT4 and GT5.

OK,
Every 1/2 ton OBS Z-71 truck with the towing package came with 4.10's standard.
Is that common enough?

The easiest way to verify is to count the ring gear teeth through the fill hole. Just use a paint pen to mark one tooth ans slowly turn the DS while counting. It may tke a few times to be sure but it is easier than splitting the clam-shell open.

Well Ive got a 98 Z71 sitting outside in my driveway with 64k miles that has the towing package and it has 3.42's.... So I say otherwise

Ive also got an 04 Z71 Avalanche with towing package and yep 3.42's

Am I the only idiot with 3.73 gears and a tow package? My mama always said I was special! :haha:
