Hi, Im trying to remove my transmition so I can change the clutch in my 81 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, but I can't figure out how to take the shifter out.

I tried pressing down on the slotted collar plate and rotating counter clockwise, but it will only turn about 45 degrees then it stops.

What am I missing here? Do I need to remove the entire top cover of the tranny?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Put the tranny in nuetral the do as you said and it should come out. It might have a bunch of crap built up around it and not allowing it to pull out so clean it good first.

I welded a piece of rebar across the shifter to use as a handle.
just for a handle to pull the shifter out of the tranny, or just for a handle for shifting?

You do not need to remove those pins. Those pins are what the collar twists on to remove the shifter.

Push down on the round base of the shifter and turn, assembly pops out. Its always worked for me.
