As stated in title. Out the back? out the side? I know my turndown pre-rearend is not the ticket.

Yep, that's how mine is and I haven't noticed any fumes.

On my 76 I have duals exiting out the sides behind the rear tires, no cats. You still can't drive it with the back window down, fumes are bad. Top off no fumes though. My 89 has a single exhaust exiting behind the driver side rear tire with a cat and I can cruise with the back window down, no fumes.

Cat and fuel injection will help immensely to cut down on fumes that come in the back window. Regardless of how you feel about the environment, the converter does a good job of eliminating a large amount of the obnoxious fumes.

With stock exhaust routing, carbed with no cat, the only time I really had any problems were at slower vehicle speeds.

Dual out to behind the rear tires. If I tune the Q-Jet lean - highest vacuum without backing off a half turn on idle then there is no smell with the back window down. But, it will ping on light hills on 87 octane - no hills in my daily drive and use high octane when we go out of town.

I battled with this very problem for years before I finally gave up and put quality cats back on the truck. Now it doesn't matter where the exhaust comes out. The exhaust no longer smells and I couldn't be happier. All my life I've have not been a fan of catalytic converters, but they do help cut way down on exhaust fumes.

Or propane....Every time I'm near a running forklift, I smile because the smell reminds of wheeling my truck.

There is a landfill in a nearby town that runs large diesel engines powering generators, on the methane gas the buried garbage in the dump creates--makes enough electricity to not only power all the related operations at the landfill, they sell the excess back to the local power company at a profit..

During hot summer months, you don't want to be one of the unlucky folks who own a home within a mile or so of that landfill--the stench is pretty gross, its like 1000 bad catalitic converters ,a few skunks and a lot of rotting corpses all burning at once !...eck16.gif....

On my '72 K5 I used to have tail pipes that dumped in front of the rear tires--didn't get much fumes with them routed that way..
I tried down spouts out behind the truck straight back, that was awful, the fumes seemed to get sucked right into the rear hatch area bad..
