how to set timing ??

hey guys im building a motor for my rod. i just got a tunnel ram intake and can not use my hei distributor. i am very good at pulling anstalling wiring and timing the hei distributor. but now i have to install a distributor with the esternal coil. are they the same,but with the externally mounted coild ? or is process with the dizzy in the cap facing #1 at tdc ect. different than setting an hei. well thanks for the help. the distributor/ coil/ ignition kit im going to use is in jegs its for a sbc it is the msd package that includes the coil,dist,wires,and an ignition box. thaks for your help guys

Its the same just with an external coil. Set it up the same way you usually do. Another thing is that number one can be anywhere you want it on the distributer, I will change the position of number one at times to make it point to the left or right side of the engine for a neater look for the wires when in the looms
