I know the internal gears are cut different, but is there a for sure way to tell one from the other by the case/pan/output????

Maybe a tag? Only way I know of is by dismantling it and checking for the straight cut gears.

dam, thats what I was afraid of....he said it came out of a delivery type van used for city maintenance.

I have heard 475's talked about for years on this site but aside from here I've never seen one or talked to anyone that has heard of them.

Check the RPO sticker in the van if its got one. Look for the code and see what it says. Even though a tranny can be swapped if it went bad, at least you'd know the rig came with the 475 from the factory.

I've heard 475's had bolt-on yokes. None had a slip yoke. But I've also seen 400's with bolt-on yokes, too, so that can go either way.

I still say dismantling it is the best and foolproof way to find out for sure.

I've never heard of anyone here running one.

I've heard the 475's are noisy due to those straight-cut gears. I've only seen 1 or 2 in my lifetime and they were out of a motorhome/camper type rig.

I have one....it's under the bench with a cracked case at the tailshaft housing end...I will look at the tag in a few days and let you know....

they do have straight cut gears and are a little noisy....most other parts interchange with the 400....:waytogo:

I have a TH475 in my chev, it was originally in 1987 Pace Arrow motorhome. 1 st and reverse are noisey. Stock TH475s came in delivery trucks and some motorhomes and have drum parking brakes. They also have HD cases, deep pans and are the best core th400 trans you can start with.

excellent....do they have the bolt on cast aluminum t/c cover too?

Damn! I forgot about those parking brakes. I remembered a mechanic telling me those brakes were another way to identify the 475's.

i was gona say ebrake rear and motor homes . and yes if the case has the bosses for 6 bolt cover drill and tap it.

TH475 only came in 2wd so no it will not have the cast aluminum cover but as said, you can drill and tap for one.
Only 4wd trannies came with a cast cover.

but with the rear housing removed it would work for 4WD right.

Yeah and the TH475 had a HD case just like a 4wd case so the only thing is if you are using it with a newer style Tcase you need to change the shaft, if you are using it with an older style case then the shaft should be the same.

Greenie,
How noisy? An irratating noise or a nice not too load whine? Do you think it would be annoying in a passenger car?

It is noticeable but cars are not in 1st gear for very long while driving. If you have all the carpet and interior in place, that will dampen the noise a little more too.

Out of curiousity, how well do those parking brakes work on those?

I picked up a core from a local trans rebuiler that had about 1500 different transmissions in a warehouse and he said he has seen cases broken from delivery drivers that take off with the e-brake on. They are built for holding 10,000+ lb vehicles from rolling.

I've got a couple of TH 475s and they came with no park so the cock's comb, the piece that is attached to the manual selector shaft, has no detent for a park position. There is no park pawl and the spring loaded link for park is also missing. I kind of like the gear whine in first gear.
