i live on the east coast in a big mud puddle. it's all tight woods trails, and deep bog holes on the trails. it's hard to dd an off road rig around here. the maintenance will kill ya.

you have to keep things light enough to not sink like a stone, but heavy duty enough that you can pull other people out and not break your driveline.

oh, and short wheelbases are better than long wheelbases.

any input on what has worked for you?

When you say tight woods what do you mean? I mean cause when you say that I think fullsize wont fit you need a jeep/midsize truck like an s10, toyota, etc. And those kinds of rigs are not what I think when 5 foot mud hole comes to mind.

The best of both worlds IMO is a Trazer. Which is a pickup cab and flatbed on a blazer frame for the shorter wheel base. But again that will still be full size wide.

Well in your neck of the woods who knows. My thinking is an IH of some sort pretty stout from the factory with v-8 power, If you want small go 800 bigger do scout 2, lots of parts swap around.

Possibly an older FSJ wagoneer or cherokee would be cool they are quite a bit smaller than a full size.

K5 frame. Extra cab S10 body. 60/14 Locked. Simple internal cage. Cooling, batterys, fuel on a small flat bed for rear weight. 350/203/205 For reliability. Twin stick the 205 for maneuverability. Aluminum head SBC under the hood. 38-42" Tires of your choice. Done.

I second that. Seen one years ago that wasn't twin sticked and it was a beast in the mud.
