Howell TBI Installation

OK I got a few things done yesterday and started installing the wiring. The Blazer already had a hole in the firewall where the factory ESC harness went through so I decided to reuse it to pass the TBI harness. The Howell harness is great, well laid out just like the factory. I decided that I don't want the MAP and ESC located on the intake. To me it makes them look crowded and I love the look of a clean SBC. I decided to mount the ESC module and MAP on the firewall out of the way so I am having to open up the harness and reroute those items.

The factory has the ESC and MAP located on the passenger side of the intake near the throttle body.

Its stuff like that which shows pride in your work.

On my moms 34 Chevy, I ran all of that and the vacuum lines into the cab and mounted them on a dummy fire wall. Don't see any of it. I like clean engine compartments. Wouldn't know it looking at the Jimmy though.

I really considered mounting the MAP inside but in the end I mounted it underhood. I did take your advice and mount the ESC module inside.

Almost

OK a few observations about the install. I know why there is not a detailed write up anywhere. Its really easy. A few items have not been mounted permanently yet like the coil. Mainly because it was raining today and I couldn't get to the junk yard and get a mount.

You can see the coil just laid there in front of the TBI on the intake. That's also what the random pink wires are in front of the Distributor. The coolant temp sensor in next to the thermostat.

Here is the pass-through that I used. Its from a mid 90's Camaro and it is located where the old ESC harness was. The fuel pump relay and two fuses I located on the firewall. I like the idea of putting them inside under the dash but time and access won out. Its not a show truck after all.

How many wires are capable going through that connector? I'm looking for one to go through the same spot.

very clean install. :thumb:

The factory GM adapter is also offset so there must be a reason.
Because the BB bore is bigger it will only fit towards rear of spread-bore intake.

BB TBI is to big for square bore intake.

Make sure TBI bolts do not extend past adapter hitting intake and cause vacuum leak.

Nice work! Howell has always made good stuff! :waytogo:

Nice clean install :thumb:

Incase i missed it, is the motor stock or did Howell burn you a chip specifically for your engine?

Ok major setback. Runs much better. Idles better doesn't surge at highway speeds. I pulled up last night at home after a short test run and popped the hood just to check everything.

A few seconds after popping the hood the upper radiator hose popped off and dumped 5 gallons of boiling water in about 2 seconds. I've never seen anything like it. Got some minor burns and coolant dripping from the ceiling, tool box and computer.

I've been running a stainless hose because I swapped in a diesel radiator. Now I'm scared to reuse it. If this happened back on the trail I'd be screwed. Or worse if my wife was driving.

Why not use a 6.2 hose? I think the come out about the same as a sbc

What did this kit run you if you don't mind me asking? Seems very simple and about perfect for my truck as well since it seems to have a small cam.

Edit: Nevermind, I looked it up. More than I can afford for this old girl.

Junk yard the computer and the distributor. Rockauto the sensors. Buy the Howell harness. Saves a crap load of money.

Just depends on the guy? Some are completely DIY, some are completely buy buy buy? Some have more time, some have less time and more money...

I know if I do a JY harness and rewire for an engine it looks better then any aftermarket one size fits all...

:dunno:

I have harnesses, computers, intakes, throttle bodies, and sensors. They can all be yours for the price of free.
