I did the caps too, it was very easy and cheap.

Keep in mind you don't want to tap the stock end cap, buy the EMC or Jarvis.

Box Tapping:

If you use a small magnet and take your time tapping a box then you will have ZERO shavings. Period!


Otherwise, yeah it would be easier to swap boxes when tapping the end cap rather than the whole box.

While we are on the subject, where did you all source your cylinder and what extended and compressed measurement works for these trucks. I assume one end hooks to the tierod and the other to the front of the axle where the steering stabilizer use to sit. Cost?

I run a PSC hydro assist ram. There are more companies out there, but i love my psc one. The thickness depends on your tire size mostly. I run a 1.75x8" ram, cause i plan to run 42's soon.

For stock location tie rods- 8" long ram is perfect
For highsteer- 6" long ram

Also note that the larger the bore(1.5", 1.75", 2") of the ram, means slower steering, but more force being applied. And the smaller the faster it will turn, but less force able to apply.

And, DO NOT use the stock stabilizer mount! It is way too weak and will sheer from the force. Use tabs to attach straight to the axle tube and tabs on the tie rod side.

how do you take out the bottom cap??

look for a pin hole on the outer lip of the box around where the cap is. Put a small punch in there and tap it till the ring pops out a little. Then walk a small screw driver around the ring till it is all the way out. The hole may be hard to find if it is covered in gunk. Try looking on the casting about where the two ring ends meet.

I tapped mine in the box itself for the main reason being that I've heard you get more fluid flow when done where I did mine. I did have mine apart so drilling and ensuring no shavings were in there gave me piece of mind. I was very surprised at the amount of shavings I COULD NOT reach using the lil magnent thru the hole. I was glad I had mine apart. I broke a sector shaft last time out so I will be swappeing sectors so I can retain the tapped box. Also, lokked and looked and found no way to take the sector shaft off the cap. You guys sure that it can be done?

the sector shaft just unscrews from the cap. easily swapped out. This thread makes me want to do mine real soon.
