HVAC box sealant

Admittedly I did a half hearted search and then just decided to ask here.

Getting ready to pull the HVAC box and was wondering what sorta seal might be under it in conjunction with the sprayed on sealer?

Im assuming there's a foam seal under the box or something like that.

Also, has anyone tried to duplicate the spray sealer or are most guys just scraping it off and leaving it that way.

Not sure what the automotive equivalent is but this is what we use for ductwork in the HVAC world. We put it on with a disposable 2" bristle brush. Its almost always grey.

no foam seal between air box and firewall just the spray seal stuff.
