I watched a bit of HorsepowerTV this a.m.

The put a LS1 top end on a gen I block, and with a Victor jr. manifold busted 500 foot lbs at 6k rpm....and got over 400 hp

Is this new, or just new to me? :dunno:

I just happen to have an old tbi motor laying about the garage...

Hmmmm

It's an older episode but was replayed.

Still an interesting idea but I think I remember you have to use a special old style block

yeah, there's always a catch...It looks like you need their block...linky

bastages....:doah:

dayum! for what they want for the block, you can just buy motor mount adapters and drop in a complete ls motor...linky

And a custom cam. You can't use a gen 1 cam. It is a custom piece with the GenIII lobe spacing and a gear for the distributor.

Yeah at that point just go full LS

Yeah but that engine is running a carb, that was the whole point, so it's an easy drop in an older car without the need for any special ECM or programming or wiring. And it actually got 560 HP and 500 lbs tq ,I saw it yesterday.

Dont worry about programming or wiring...Just put a carb on it...

putting a carb on an LS type engine, for me anyways defeats the point of the LS engine to begin with.

Not really, the biggest difference between LS1 and Vortec was the firing order which made a smoother running engine, and if IIRC also no more siameezed cylinders, so even temps at the exhaust.
The difference between the Vortec and the older SBC were roller valve train which also makes a smoother engine.
So in putting a Carb on a vortec which has been done a lot, and putting a Carb on an LS1 which also has been done, will still be worht it over a regular old SBC.
Off course a full stock LS1 with MPFI is going to be more efficient, but will also require more work and more $$$ to retrofit onto an older Muscle car with no electronics.
