Hydralic winches

I have always wanted a hydralic winch but my plan is too run it off a 12 v pump which adds cost to it. My reasoning for doing this is the 5 or 6 weeks that I can get into deep mud, it takes forever to pull with an electric cause they over heat. I have talked to MM about their winches a bit and your power steering system needs to be in perfect shape with no old fluid in it all. After talking with several poeple with these winches the general concenses is that you need to replace or clean every part of the power steering system so there is absolutly no old fluid or sludge in the system.

hmmm....old ****ty fluid...mabey that is my problem....ive been running the same ATF in my pump for a while now....i wonder if that fact that it is ATF has anything to do with it as well...ya think?

I am 99% positive that I read somewhere to NOT use ATF

Search that here. Lots of chatter on the topic. Probably not supposed to, but many here have done it with good results. My own experience was that the input seal started leaking shortly after I used ATF. May have been related, may not.

In any case a clean system is just generally a good idea. A larger than you think you might really need cooler is not a bad one either.

Allow me to interject into this little conversation.

Just as credentials I am a licensed Airframe Mechanic. I see hydraulic systems all the time, that work alot more than any winch ever will.

I have two words for all of you...."Hydraulic Accumulator"

one of these would go along way to solving some of these problems you are experiencing with the hydro-winch.
sorry I didn't want to take over this thread. just shed a little light on the subject.

ATF vs. Power Steering Fluid

When I was in school for auto mechanics ('94 to '96) at the GM ASEP school in Kansas City, our professor said that the ONLY differance between ATF and PSF is the color. That color differance is to assist in finding leaks easier.

funny you should mention accumulators....It never even crossed my mind to add one.........good idea though.

and seeing as I'm a picture whore heres a few that are laying around the yard now

little, cute, effective

maybe a little bigger would do ya fine...

maybe build a skid shack just for the accumulator then.......

I'd like to see the specs for each b4 I buy into this.

For an accumulator to fix the probelm my friend had with his PSD it would have to be big enough to run the winch for the entire pull. I've no idea what that volume might be, but I suspect that packaging it would be a problem.
