I bought a used trailer with "hydraulic" brakes. It has the kind that the tongue must push on a cylinder to create pressure to the brakes. My question is: How do I know if they are working correctly? How do I test them?
TIA

You could always try backing uphill, and see if they grab and stop the truck. I generally avoid them like the plague, so I'm not really sure how to properly test them. You can also drive around and make several stops to see if the drums warm up fairly evenly. They do need to be manually adjusted to near drag or slight drag. They have adjuster wheels inside the access holes.

Yep, they are surge breaks. Backing up a hill would tell you if they work. If they are setup really well, backing up quickly on flat ground should stop the truck too. I've had a single axle disk brake boat trailer stop my 1/2 ton truck with a 350 when the brakes were not properly released backing up.

I've seen some that don't even have a release for backing. I cracked up watching my friend try to back his 27' boat uphill into a shop with the trailer brakes locking up.:doah: It turns out a good running start is the only way.:haha:

The newer boat trailer are either 5 flat plug, or the round 7, both with a wire tapped into the reverse lights to release the brakes.

Truthfully, i never had problems wiht my old drum surge setup (well, never problems backing up:doah:), but there is a lockout piece you put in/on the coupler to keep it from working so you can back up.

I'm used to seeing a manual lockout lever or a plate to flip up, but I didn't see anything on his brake assembly to lock it out. Maybe it was supposed to release with the backup light power, but that would defeat the whole purpose of surge brakes on a trailer (so they don't rely on electricity when you're gonna dunk it in the water).:dunno: Could have been a wiring issue, especially since he was pulling it with a Stupid Duty.:haha:

Nah, the electronic lockout is just that, it just keeps the brakes locked out for backing up.

Most trailers don't have somethign on them for lockout purposes. Normally its a little metal piece you put in the coupler side portion to keep it from sliding. Anythign you want to jamb in there would work. Like a metal hose fitting. Or get the proper one from teh trailer place.

Not my trailer=not my problem.:haha: I haven't talked to that guy in a year or so anyway, but thanks for the info.:D
