Hydro assist install update, pump mods.

I have a modded pump and have been running it for a little while. No problems yet and it has a few thousand miles on it. The only thing I have not done is extend the neck but that will get done when I do the engine swap soon. Another thing I am going to try is the notch on the fitting. When my rpms get really low (500 rpms) the ram does not want to work so that might help it. I'll post up some pics of my set up later.
When you say 'the ram does not want to work', do you mean you have NO power steering at all or just nothing more than stock??

3 days of wheeling The Hammers and not one problem from the steering. It worked flawlessly...I wouldn't have been able to do the trails I did without it. We did Sledge, Aftershock, Sunbonnet and I made a a pretty good attempt at Back Door. Steering worked fine on all of them. My clutch linkage as another story though...:doah:

Sweet, glad you had a good weekend. I was picking up wheels in Chico - thought about that being your new home. Well, close anyway.

Did you end up doing ALL the mods (flow and pressure)? Does it steer off idle now?

Did all the mods on the WTO website. And yes it steers off idle now. Works perfectly.:D

TTT for a good thread. I notched the fitting today and I can now stand outside the truck and spin the wheel with one finger as fast as I can and the ram keeps up. I'm running a 2x8 BTW>

I'm dragging this one out of the past for a bit of advice.
I've now done all the mods including notching the fitting to increase flow but something's still not right.
If I turn the wheel slow it seems fine but no different to stock. If I turn the wheel faster, like you would manouvering at low speed, it feels like I have little or no power assist at all....not even the stock power.
So does anyone know if I need more flow? More pressure?
Any suugestions appreciated.
I'm using an 1 1/2" ram with a 1" shaft x 8" and a new GMPerformance pump.

It almost sounds like your pump is going bad, I have heard if you give it too much flow you can blow your pump.

It's a new pump plus I don't think I've gone over the top with the pressure. I've literally only driven around the block to test it and it was like it from the get go so I doubt I've screwed it up. I can see what your saying though.

Your pump might be new and bad at the same time. About a month ago I installed 3 new pumps in 4 days before it worked right. And the last 2 pumps were ac delco's.

You might still have air in the system.
This is more likely the problem. Ive had system that i didnt have to do anything to and were blead fine and ive had other that took a month or two of driving to finally get all the air out...

I hear what you're saying but let me clarify that the system worked great as stock. I put the ram on and a few of the mods to the pump and it was too slow for proper street driving so I disconnected the ram 'till I had more time to play with it. Once again it drove perfectly.
This time I notched the fitting, re-connected the ram and now still have slow/underpowered steering.
I reckon I need more flow but how?
Any more thoughts?

You had to take the system apart to do that though right...???? If air got in and cant get out....

Yeah maybe but I've bled it and it seems strange that it's happened the same each time, especially as when I removed the ram and capped the ports to go back to standard it was fine.

Is it possible that the ram is leaking by internally? Sounds like it to me by the symptoms. Maybe pull it off, empty it, move the ram to one end and hit it with compressed air. If the piston seal is bad air will blow right by.

It should be ok as it's new but you never know!

I hope you get this thing fixed. Its a project I will do in the future, but would like to see how you fix yours. Sometimes the hydro stuff (Hydroboost, and steering) bleeds easily, sometimes not. Patience definitely pays.

So do I !! I can't see it being air but I'll drive it around this week and see if it gets any better as I've no time to try anything else at the moment. I'm still leaning towards a flow rate problem as it works fine when you turn the steering wheel slowly.
