The hydro assist on my M-1009 is loosin a lot of fluid and it seems to be comin out of the vent hole in the end of the cap.I used a piece of rad hose with a cut off res neck in the end of it.The problem only seems to show up after heavy steering/brake usage(I have hydroboost also). On the last trip I had to put 2 quarts in it,in one day.Everything is tight and I feel like it is bein pushed out when the cyl cycles back.It also seem's to get air in it when the front of the truck is on steep inclines.

So anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?? Do I need to change to a remote res,and if so what kind are you guy's running???I have a cooler for the ps fluid that is on the rad support, but I am consdering changing to one with a fan.

Will a different rem res mounted on the rad support above the pump help??

I have never seen anybody have good luck with the extended fill neck like you are using. It was popular a few years ago and seemed to be a stop gap measure.

I would suggest a PSC res. setup. They seem to be a good value and are one top notch company.

You will mount their res. above the pump someplace (core support?) then run a line from res. to pump. The return will go to the res as you would expect.

I was running hyrdo assist with Hydro boost breaks too. It seemed after a lot of steering/braking, my fluid would get hot. I put an inline cooler in and it went away. It sounds to me like your fluid is overheating. Regardless if it is or not, you need to get a cooler in your setup. Just me $.02

I've been running hydro assist with an extended reservoir using radiator hose for 3 years now, no issues.

You've probably been wheelin' with me once or twice during that stretch, seems I'm proof to the contrary of that statement ;)

Back to the original question, I'd bet the fluid is boiling over. Hydroboost, hydro assist and power steering might be too much for your system.

IMO, a bigger cooler or a bigger reservoir is the answer (if I were to do it again, I'd probably buy/make a bigger power steering reservoir rather than use radiator hose).

here is mine steve o :D

I have faith that the leak will come for all of you.:haha:

It's really not that the extended hose is bad it's that Radiator hose isn't the best for contact with oil. It breaks down and will cause leaks and thus problems. This does however take time.

Trust me I know that it is very common practice and I think in general acceptable, However I am/have moved to a different level of of demands from my vehicle and not having the absolute right parts in the right places to do their job ruins something that there is a lot of Money being spent on. Think KOH race or Vegas to Reno the hard way type of monetary commitment.

Will adding a average larger cooler correct the problem. Perhaps? (We are only guessing that the fluid is getting hot. Maybe the extension hose isn't long enough for the fluid displacement from the ram and when the fluid gets warm it overflows?) Howe steering claims that their fluid likes the 180+ degree range for operation.

Will putting a quality res. on with a filter and a high quality cooler filled with quality fluid fix his problem. I say 100% yes! If it were me I would go this direction. Quality parts installed well leads to a long and happy life with very few let downs along the way. This is also the most costly of the solutions.:doah:

Just the way I see it. But I have been drinking some funny koolaid from Pirate these days.:D
