Hydro assist ?'s

Stand alone transmission coolers make good steering coolers and they often have 3/8" ends on them that are the same size as your return lines. Put it in front of the radiator and it usually works great.

As far as added capacity, mine has a piece of radiator hose and I would advise against going that route. I would find a way to put a remote reservoir on it.

Do you have problems with the hose leaking or what?

Do you think that the capacity in the cooler is enough or should I install a res also?

Thanks Chris, the doubler is the shizz

I have the PS pump that is separate resovore can. I plan to add another can right next to it. I also has the radiator from the 6.2 diesel which has 2 oil coolers in it.
The driver side is already being used for the tranny cooler but I plan to use the passenger side for the hydro assist.
If you can find DIRTYGOAT he has an awesome thread about all that stuff too.
Don't be scared of that [SEARCH] button, there is a lot of hydro assist threads out there.

EDIT: opps looks like you have been there already.:doah:

Ive got the radiator hose as well and mine leaks. tighten the clamps and it will quit for a little while. Im pretty sure that power steering fluid deteriorates the kind of rubber radiator hoses are made out of.

I'm runnin a Ford exploder trans cooler,a isuzu trooper ext res, plus the stock saginaw pump w res plus a remote filter off a S-10.I can hold about a gallon of fluid and I'm runnin straight hyd fluid in a non modified pump. Its not a fancy off the shelf kit but just some cheap junkyard stuff that I put together. The rubber hose trick didnt work too long for me,it would get hot and collapse the hose.

I have had it leak, I'm not sure the radiator hose really like the steering fluid. On top of that it looks dumb and it just barely holds enough fluid.

You definitely need a bigger reservoir somehow, with a single ended ram you will run the pump dry turning one direction and you will push fluid out of the stock reservoir going the other direction.

The cooler adds capacity but not reservoir capacity.

I grabbed a factory P.S. cooler off a Ford pickup at the junk yard for 10 bucks. It's a stacked plate cooler, works great.

I run the same stacked plate cooler for the trans and p/s, with both mounted in front of the radiator.

An option may be to get a p/s pump designed for a factory hydroboost truck. It's already set up with a nipple on the end of the pump that goes through a hose to a reservoir. I have a 6.2 with this setup factory and have never had a problem with capacity.

I used an old transmission cooler, and then added the Caravan neck to the top of my stock resevoir, some hose to a resevoir that I think came off a BBC and is mounted to my alt bracket.

Rednecked yes, but it works. The hose does kink a little at one turn, but I'll add 45* fitting in there one day during a tear down.

Pictures maybe if I remember in the next couple of days.

I don't have hydro assist yet, but right now I have a trans cooler from a Dodge caravan mounted in front of the radiator and I also have a hose on the pump neck. But my hose is for a fuel filler neck so it should hold up better than radiator hose

I ran a chevy remote res from a truck with hydro boost above the pump two coolers. One i purchase from PSC that can handle the system on it's own and the stock cooler just for extra support and it helped save buying hose. I also put in a remote trans filter that hold a TON more fluid and probably increased my fluid capacity the most.

What i did was mount the res above the pump(first pic) in between my york and alt. with heat sheilds then i ran to the box and from the box to the filter(can post pic later of that) I mounted the filter passanger side lowest point on the frame cross-member so when i change it or flush it the fluid won't get everywhere.(but still kept it safe) Then to the aftermarket cooler also mounted passanger side(pic two). Then to the stock cooler which i bent (pic three) so that the inlet was next to the out of the aftermarket cooler. you can see the inlet in the second pic in the bottem left corner. Then back to the pump. I also wasn't stingy on the hose length since it doesn't hurt and adds cap..

So far everything is working perfect and is neat, clean and out of the way, like it should be.

I like that setup, thanks for the info :waytogo:

I like that set up too.
I also have the remote res. They say it has the enough volume to handle the extra fluid alone. I can see that considering the full mark is about an inch up from the bottom leaving plenty of room for overflow. I was imagining if I had to it would be easy enough to mount a second can next to the original if it wasn't big enough.

Ya it's has plenty of room! What I did to bleed air was cycle the wheel slowly and then always check it when the ram is fully closed for me that is wheels turned to the passenger side. I will try to post other pics later. I was thinking about making a show thread if enough people are interested.

Well I'm in LA now so when I get back to Santa Cruz I will see what I can do about a write up with part numbers and everything
