Hydro ram placement, quickie

The tabs ended up facing different ways, which is fine too. I ground one down to fit the angle of the tierod tubing, threw it in a bucket of water to cool,

Never cool it that way, it can become more brittle.

It will protect your cylinder from damage. Same reason to run jump stops and limit straps for your shocks, its not good on them to top out/bottom out.

The ram is a much stronger stop than the knuckle screws.
It's the screws/knuckles that needs protection from the ram.

Btw when was the last time you saw limiting straps on the rams of an excavator? ;)

Excavators are usually doing the work and don't have external forces pulling the cylinder to max stroke. Watch my video from a few years ago and see how turned the tire gets under external forces not created by my turning the wheel. Do what you want but I believe that helped prevent any breakage. I also run Solid knuckles and full hydro.

hmmm gotta point there. That kind of arguement hadn't been made yet, so setting the stops makes a lot more sense now. I'd probably set them to within 1/16", I'd still have the ram bottom out before the adjusters, as close as I can make them.

I can see what you mean. I think I'm going to make an adjustment to my stops.

Wow, that was a scary descent! :waytogo:
I'm not sure I agree about the ram not taking the abuse, but I see your point.
It couldn't hurt to have the limiting screws set at least close to the rams limit.

A strong enough ram will destroy the stops and knuckles... I don't use stops, just let the ram limit itself...
