my 1985 K30 with a 454 engine, and Hydroboost braking system is having a problem. The Hydroboost is getting blazing hot when the engine is running. I have never run into this type of problem befeore with Hydroboost.

When I remove the steeering pump belt from the power steering, and start the engine, the Hydroboost does not heat up, thus this tells me the problem is in the Hydroboost system.

The heating problem seems to start in the high pressure hose, which runs between the Hydroboost and the power steering pump, then travels to the rest of the system.

Has anybody heard of a Hydroboost system heating up before? I have not replaced the Hydroboost yet, and am going to wait until I am more sure that the Hyroboost is the problem.

Hydraulic fluid will get hot from restrictions which you might have inside the hose or bad internal component seals.Could also be the pump itself heating the fluid if the pressure relief valve is stuck.Start it cold and fell around to try and figure out where the heat begins to start building up.

A restriction in the Hydroboost or steering pump system is the only thing I could think of myself, which could be causing the problem. I am going to start the engine, and see if the heat starts at the pump or Hydroboost.

Also, the brakes and steering are working purfect...it is just building up a ton of heat in the steering/Hydroboost system.

Flush it and throw a transmission cooler on the return line? My Hydrobooster gets pretty hot, same as the gear box after good drive.

I check the steering system, and the heat is definitly starting at the Hydroboost on the high pressure hose running between the power steering pump and the Hydroboost.

I tried replacing the high pressure hose in question, and flushed the system...hoping not to have to spend the 150$ the rebuilt Hydroboost is going to cost me, and it is still running hot.

My Hydro system is running abnormaly hot (catch the truck on fire...HOT). It starting doing this out of no-where about a week ago. I am just going to replace the Hydro, and hope it works.

No, but him being in Las Vegas where its sometimes over 100F AT NIGHT...it wouldnt hurt. I really recommend a magnetic filter on the return line too just incase any crap builds up in there.

Ford has been adding coolers to the power steering system since the beginning of time. Helps the system stay happy when crawling around on the trails, sawing at the wheel with big tires.

Amtek, my 1990 burb has a power steering cooler, factory, and the hydroboost i got was hooked up to one. I think i'll take the steps to hook mine up then.
