I have an 87 suburban, The PO had added a hypertech chip PN 197 192.

The truck was running OK after doing some repairs, but would stall / die at random times: while running down the road, at a stop light, when switching into reverse, but not always.

I was thinking that the hypertech chip might not be catching an error code, I dont know much about this computer stuff YET...

Swapped the hypertech for the stock chip...Truck has been running great, it hasn't died once since the switch.

The biggest thing that Ive noticed though is the way the truck shifts gears, especially the shift into 2nd, it used to be very violent, and I was sure that the transmission was going out, but since swapping the chips it has been shifting smooth and solid.

I was just wondering if anyone had similar experiences.

Basic TBI operation, and tuning knowledge is my next area to study for sure!!

One option to try is but the Hypertech Chip back into the ECM and see if the problem comes back? It could be an electrical connection got better once the chips were replaced?

Computer shouldnt do anything with the trans in that year other than operate TC lockup, if you have a 700r4.

I do have a 700r4, and it seemed that downshifting did nothing, ill have to try going downhill, and then swapping the chip as well, ill let yall know.

You sure? I don't know for fact but I thought it did have some options for shifting like when in drive for towing it shifted differant.

I have never seen a chip go bad and agree with dave that connections could be the cause. I have looked at a couple aftermarket Hyperchips after downloading the information and there is hardly a differance from stock chips...

maybe with a 4L60E, the 700's are all controlled with the TV cable. The lockup function is controlled by the computer though.

Thanks for all the info, I thought the chip only would advance the timing a little bit, but wasn't sure.
I swapped the chips back, it seems to run similarly, the tranny is shifting better so maybe the chip wasn't seated correctly.
