Agreed. I would never do disc on a 1/2 ton axle. I just don't see any benefits to justify the cost. A well turned drum with a high quality set of shoes is gonna work just as good as a single piston caliper, and as Rene mentioned the e-brake works.....Keep the drum brakes, they work fine, they're as light as disc's and have a park brake that works good.
Sounds like an easy life for a 10 bolt. Just pick up a spare gov-bombless 10 bolt to throw in when needed, and keep an eye out for a deal on a locker. If you get another 30spline, then you end up with a spare set of axle shafts too.
