Howdy guys,
Its my first real post on here. Always been an old chevy guy. And I was just talking to my wife about how I have always wanted a second gen full convertible blazer. And while I was on the rig this time (work on a drilling rig), low and behold, what pops up in the local classifieds? A 73 Blazer, $1200 obo. I talked to the guy that owned it, and it sounds like I can get it even cheaper. Supposedly it is in fairly good conditon, almost no rust, 350, four speed manual, np205, locking hubs, top in good shape, runs and drives good, all original. The only thing that bothers me is that he rhino lined the interior years ago. But he promised me that the floor boards were not rusty, but who knows, if nothing else is rusty, fenderwells, etc, he is probably telling the truth.

Here in a little while I will be going to check this bad boy out, and unless it is a total pile, I will probably buy it. I will keep ya'll posted and post pics, whether I buy it or not.

if it runs and moves ofder him 1000 bucks.its worth more if it isnt rusted up.is it in alabama?not too much snow and salt to rust that body out.definitely check the rocker boxes and underbody for the usual rust.surface rust is alright, but if its starting to go through, you will be in for a lot of work reworking the metal to be good again.as was said even a rusty 73 is still a full top convertable and the coolness factor is always there, even if you have to restore it.definitely post somse pics when possible.

If it is rhinoed on the inside crawl under the truck and look at the bottom sides of the sheetmetal where the ususal rust would be. For that kinda money I'd put up with some sheet metal rust.

Good luck, hope it works out for ya. I love my 73' WElcome to the board.

Good advice on that year look hard at the inside above the tires, bottom trailing edge of doors and rocker panels and look in bed from underside especially at rear corners.

Bring a flashlight, dirty clothes, wire brush, and a magnet to check for mucho bondo.

I loved my 74!

I would also say to check out the body panel lines and gap all around the door when its closed to make sure there isnt much if any body sag, that will indicated a weakening of the structure maybe from rotted out rocker boxes or shody body work. Good luck, hope its a keeper.

Alright, I went and looked at the truck. It was rougher than I expected after talking to the guy on the phone. But I bought it anyway after he decided to take $500. The truck wouldn't run, the points are the problem I beieve. So that is how I bargained it down so cheap. The kid and his dad were both there and garenteed me the drivetrain was good, and gave me both their numbers in case there was a problem. They said they could try to fix it and I could come back, but for that price I said hell with it, load it up.

The truck looks like hell, but it is solid where it matters. The bed/tub looks to be pretty much totally rust free. There is a little bit of rust on the drivers side under the pedals. The back, behind the seat looks godo. Frame is solid, no rust. The only rust is both rear fenderwells behind the tires, the radiator support, and passsenger inner fender, where the battery ate it up. And the tailgate is trashed.

The good: tub, floors, rockerboxes, frame, roof, windshield area, all that stuff is great.

The bad: rear lower quarters, radiator support, pass inner fender, and I will probably replace both front fenders as they are beat up. Interior is pretty much shot/not there.

Luckily all those parts are pretty cheap, and are reasonably easy to replace. The "rhino lining" he was talking about was more like a rubberized undercoating, so it was easy to tell what was going on.

But I figured for $500, what the hell. The good mud tires on it are worth half that. And I have a complete HEI distrubutor, edelbrock carb and intake from an old motor I am fixing to drop on there today if I have time.
Oh, and it has a 350, rebuilt a few years before it was parked two years ago, 4 speed manual, np205 w/ locking hubs, dana 44 front 12bolt rear with posi.

here are a few pics of what I have gotten myself into. lol

okay, I wasted a bunch of time on photobucket. I failed to realize I need 15 posts before I can do that. Well, I gotta get to posting then. lol
Will post them as soon as I am able. I'll try to wash the 500lbs of mud off the the truck and take a couple more too.

If your building a crawler most of that sheet metal will get cut away anyways so no big deal. Fix what ya need to and cut the rest out. Good thing about the frame being rust free. Everything else is easy to replace. You got a smog exempt year K5, thats always a good thing even if it's not an issue for you, I didn't look where you are at. You got a good deal. I paid $2700 for my 73' and it's 99% rust free but I still trimmed a crap load of sheet metal off it. So your ahead already.

you can buy anether one for 500 for the panels and interior and have a nice running truck with full convertable.most of the stuff is the same from 76 to 87 also and should fit your 73.wouldnt be hard to find the stuff to make it look nice.nice you got em talked down to 500.they musta really needed the money or the truck gone.either way.bring on the pics man.

Update on my 73. I finally got her running. It hadn't been ran in three years or so. I drained the gas out and put in some new. Fiddled with it a while and found the points distributor wouldn't putting out. I had an old built 283 sitting in the garage with an HEI distributor, eldelbrock intake and 600cfm carb. So I pulled that whole setup off and threw it on.

While taking it apart I found a little suprise, the engine looked bone stock, with the huge filter housing and old quadrajet. But once i pulled that off, I noticed the intake was a really old Holley Street Dominator aluminum intake painted orange. Huh, thats different I thought. Anways put the new setup on there, BAM! she fired on the first hit. Cool, I thought, I let it run just a second, hop in, and take her down the street. I ease up the road, turn around, and thought what the hell? I planted the throttle pretty hard, and both rear tires broke loose and the thing started coming around. Whoa! This thing is pretty strong. I get home, and am fooling with a small leak on the intake gasket, and I check out the heads, wait a minute, those look like double humps on there. So I pulled the valve cover, and shore nuff. They are stamped 3782461, so i run the numbers, they are found on 65 chevelles and corvette 327/350hp, 327/365, 327/375hp. Sweet! Those babies ought to be worth the $500 I paid for the truck.

I thought it had a pretty rough idle, but I figured it was because it needed a little tune up. lol. She doesn't smoke at all either.

I rode about 30 cautious miles yesterday and it did great.

Man thats awesome. Sounds like its working out for ya. Good for you man. You gonna membership up soon and post pics of your rig?

Alright, kinda aggravated. The tailgate is shot in this truck, and there is no glass for it. So far hurricane Ida has dumped a couple inches of rain in the truck. I have called around to all the junkyards in Southeast Alabama, no one has a tailgate for it. When I ask them if they have any K5 parts, its like I asked them if they have damn unicorn or something, like its the rarest thing ever.

The search continues...

Welcome to the site. A membership will come very useful on your build.
Don't go too serious on the rebuild. You will end up beating on it sooner or later.
You will find many testimonials on that.

A trip to Texas would be a little far. lol. Thanks anyway though.

What about Natchez or Jackson, MS?? I have a gate that is in good shape with glass. Send me a PM or visitor message if interested.

Congrats on the new ride!! Sounds like you found a nice project!!

HAHA i never ever have seen a K5 in a junk yard in Alabama. Im from Mobile and the most i saw was a few subs and the usual 87-up pickup trucks. I saw two K5s up here in a JY and it was really weird.

Good find! x2 on getting a membership, it will pay for itself trust me. When you get that top off and drive around let us know! :D

$500???

I would of bought it just for parts...

I'm gonna start looking for another full vert after I'm done building the trail rig... I'd like to build one for mall crawlin'...:D

Congrats on the new rig...
