Had an inkling that I should change the oil in the diffs today...this is what I get when I crack the front cover.

Bad picture, but the top 1/2 of the oil was pus yellow (and about as thick) and the gunk on the bottom was a thick, gray paste. Letting everything drain off the ring and pinion right now, and I'm going to squirt some clean gear oil in there and wipe everything out before I refill it. Can't wait to see what the fluid in the back looks like...

Yuck. When I pulled my cover mine looked like NesQuick and smelled like my now ex ole lady was in the kitchen. It wasn't good. :doah:

Looks like you got water in it. I would just clean it out real good and refill it.

If it starts looking like this then worry.......

Yeah, when I bought the truck, the transfer case was leaking gray goo from a bad seal...evidence keeps building up that the previous owner had no damned clue what he was doing when he built and 'wheeled this thing. Never change the diff fluid, never change the t-case fluid, etc etc.

Ah well, learning experiences are always the best! Got the diff cleaned out (squirted some clean gear oil in there to displace all the old junk, wiped everything out as well as I could), and just RTV'd the cover and bolted it back on. Give it about a half hour to cure, refill the front diff, and then discover what mysteries lurk behind the rear diff cover.

I'm hoping the guy who built the truck (6" lift and 35s) at least had the common sense to put a posi in the rear, since it's not a G80 truck, but I think I'm going to be disappointed.

Mine came out clear :eek1:

I was running water as lube

Reminds me of the 2 gallons of water I had in my oil pan the very last time I took my ZR2 mudding.

Rear diff cover is off, just old fluid, no water contamination. Open diff, though. You'd think a damned redneck would have at least done a lincoln locker, but no. Figures.

Next on the list - posi for the 10b rear, and new tires. Any recommendations on a cheap locker?

I got a $600 dollar full carrier Detroit Locker, for $300:D

****e, I was thinking the $100-150 range, heh.

eh...don`t think you`ll find one quite that cheap. Probably in the $250-300 area...

Damn, that's more than I want to spend, especially when an entire 10b axle can be had for cheaper than that :\ Add install cost to it and that's way more.

If you get a regular lunch box locker, installation is fairly easy, at least that`s what I`m told:confused:

I've had really bad luck with pulling the gears out of the diff. Might be because the 4.10s in my Trans Am are so touchy, but I'm really leery about trying to reset the backlash, redoing the shims, etc.

Went to change the rear diff vent, and the metal nipple that comes off of the axle just snapped. Must have rusted apart inside the vent line.

Can that be removed and replaced with a new nipple? LMC doesn't show it as a part, but it doesn't look cast into the casing itself.

I just pulled the transfer-case out of my brother’s 2001 HD. I went to drain the oil before I pulled it and NO OIL came out. I'm surprise he went and came back from Oregon while pulling his 35' Weekend Warrior.

Probably because the damn redneck was smart enough to know what happens to a 10 bolt when you weld it and try to wheel it. Can you say BOOM
