So the guys story, he bough the truck rough, and then basically replaced all the body sheet metal, so he's claiming zero rust. Didn't touch anything mechanical aside from a 3in lift to clear 35's. Truck is a daily drivable rig, currently inspected and ready to drive home. Has a 350/350/203 combo from the guys description (he wasn't sure). He dosn't have photographs of the restoration and paint, but claims he has paperwork though. Interior is bed lined. We cut to the chase pretty quick and his selling price is $5500. Factoring in what I'd pay to ship a west coast truck here, I don't think that's too bad. He sent me two pics from his phone of the truck before any work was done, and while they don't show a lot, the rig looks pretty solid. He claims his reason for selling is a divorce and he doesnt want his wife to get it. (even asked if I wanted a boat or a lake house).

Cost of two greyhound bus tickets and fuel (assuming 10mpg) to drive home come in under $500, and I can get it over a weekend without taking off from work. Assuming the guys on the level, I'm pretty interested in this thing.

Thoughts?

To that end, the guy said he's about a half hour north of Atlanta Ga, anyone here that might be able to swing by and take a look at it this weekend? I'm happy to PayPal gas/lunch/beer money.

Get him to post a video...It will be way more accurate than pictures and you will get to see how it starts up etc...

Get him to take some close up pics of the windsheild frame inside and out. And also from underneath along the floor and cab mounts.

Looks like he lives in the Sandy Springs area...the "wealthy" side of Atlanta...so he may have spent what he said on it...but everybody is right about video...still shots make everything look better....looks like he paid $4000 for paint job....that average for a good quality paint job.

It's a lot nicer than mine was and the asking price was $5500, I got it for less, but this one has lots of stuff fixed on it already...mine did have that almost new GM engine in it though...

That is not an original 1973 tailgate, so you know that was indeed replaced.

Also, it has manual hubs, so if it is an NP203 be sure to ask him what kit he put in it to make it part-time.

Looks pretty nice from what I can see. Looks solid and you can tell the replacement tailgate. Looks like the work done was real quality and paint is nice. I'd go for it if I had the money. I wanted to build mine myself so I got mine a lot cheaper and it needed a ton of work. The interior looks nice too. They did a real nice resto on it.

I just saw one down the road from me the other day for I believe $3000, all white, '84ish era, looked clean just from a drive by... :D

Well the pic at least shows he told a part of the truth about the boat. I agree, ask for a video since you are so far away. Looks clean from the pics. I'm in Ca so not have no clue about what to check for rust. If divorce is the reason maybe he can become more motivated if you throw out a solid counter offer.

Damn, hiccup... Not the end of the world I hope, just need to figure out my next step. Turns out he doesn't have a title for it... I've never run into this before.

He's sending me pics of the engine, underbody, and bed tonight, along with the VIN and assumed mileage.

To the google I go, but anyone know how big of a deal breaker no title is?

Assuming it doesnt have a lein/something held against the title or stolen, its no big deal in MY state. Just 100$ and some paper work, not sure on other states though.

Looks great from here...love the color! :thumb:

Hope this one works out to be the one. I sure would like to have it by the looks of it anyway.

He needs to get a duplicate title, Contact DMV with VIN and get history and what to do.

He needs to get a duplicate title, Contact DMV with VIN and get history and what to do.

and here is where the fun begins....I happen to live in a Non-Title state...meaning, in Alabama all they require is a bill of sale and you register it...no title required on a vehicle older that 25 years....
That saved my butt on my deal...

I am legal and have a tag, but Alabama will not Title my Blazer....therefore, if I were to ever sell it I would have to sell it in a Non-Title State.

I looked at the Virginia DMV website and it appears that Virginia is Title State so you would not be able to register it and get a tag.

Did he just lose the title or did he never get it transferred into his name?

Because that is what happened to me...the guy who sold it to me never got it transferred into his name...so only the original owner that he bought it from could get the title transferred....well...I spent $700 tracking him down and getting him to sign the paperwork and come to find out that he owed the state some kind of emissions tax on it and they wouldn't grant the title until he paid it....he never did...I never got a title...

Don't give up on it, but you will quickly find out how interested he is in selling it when you ask him to go through all that trouble to get a duplicate of the title...
That blows...it makes no difference legally here but I still wanted a title...I wanted to see the deed with my name on it...

Shiny paint..... BEWARE!

I see a cracked dash, and rotten weatherstrips on the hardtop. It looks like a truck that was "gussied up" a bit..... It's hard to tell how much or how skillfully.

Lack of photos of the bodywork is not a good sign, and a heavy coat of bed liner may be hiding shoddy repair work.... Perhaps they sprayed over rust instead of fixing it?

As I've said before, don't be seduced by shiny paint.... Look at what you are getting besides the paint, and see if you still think its got value. It doesn't seem like he even knows what running gear its got, or the condition it's really in.

Without a lot more photographic detail, I wouldn't bother making the trip.

I bought a car in Georgia once and then found out there was no title. I lived in Carolina at the time which is a title state.

I went to the courthouse and got what's called a "magistrates title". This means you put the vehicle up for auction, and bought it yourself. That's how they explained it to me.

That being said, you will need to take time off work to pick it up if your work days are M-F.

In Idaho with no title a bill of sale, title search, certfied mail to last title owner. If not reported stolen or the last title owner has a gripe, they issue you a title.
