I was at the local junkyard today for some things (yes, it was 16 degrees outside) and I found a york compressor bolted to a SBC in a '78 C10 with aftermarket AC. I did not get it because I wasn't sure if that's what it was at first. Now I'm thinking I should go back tomorrow and grab it and the mounting bracket. It was probably good (had r134a fittings installed) and It will probably cost less than $30 for the york and bracket. Is that a good enough deal to make a special trip across town tomorrow worthwhile? I have enough little projects already, but it would be nice to have OBA.

You waited to long! Should of humped your butt back today and got it. :doah:

You could always resell it. :D

They are nice to have my OBA is a cig plug in type and sucks.

Get your but up and be waiting when they reopen Sunday! :D

OK, that's kind of what I was thinking... after I got home and read the article here.

I'll go back in the morning:D

You know there are 3 different Yorks right? They physically look the same on the outside but the stroke is different on each and you want the longest stroke for the most air output which would be the 210 model.

Yes, I read that. I'm thinking a full size truck will have a better chance of having the longer stroke than a compact car. I could be way wrong though. It also has the bracket(s) to bolt a york right to a SBC.

The bracket alone would make the deal good if you're not into fabbing stuff easily. You have to pull the pulley off the shaft to tell which model it is if the spec plate is missing.

I have no problem fabbing, but I'm kind of lazy, so no fab stuff is what I try to do:D I did not look for a model number or anything today, I just noticed the compressor and all of the other stuff that was added on and still complete.

The tag in the front of the york should tell you what it is. If it's a newer model it will also say "Climate Control" instead of York. Same thing, just different tag. I've mostly pulled them of Chevy vans or full size trucks with brackets. If I can't find any, I normally go to Volvos, they also use yorks. Among other vehicles, but I have found that Volvos are always well maintained.

anyone have a kilbey bracket for the serp belt style sbc stuff.

i want to get one and take a few mesurments.

as kilbey is a big rip off now you have to buy everything from him. before you could get just the bracket.

and like scott said you need to remove the pulley to find out what york you have.

I have their bracket for the serp on my rig. Not sure what measurements you're looking for but Muddytazz is also wanting some measurements from them. I will be doing an exhaust gasket (soon hopefully) and will have it apart and could probably get whatever measurement you need.

When i bought my bracket from Kilby it wasn't cheap then but i didn't want to deal with fabbing up a bracket myself so i just bought theirs, it also came with the belt. The last i looked you could still by just the bracket but it no longer came with the belt and it was quite a bit more than what i paid fro the bracket AND belt.

fyi, they also came on the early full size van with sb. Around 73-76.

I usually look at the vans too, haven't seen one yet.

I went back this morning, but some nugget had beat me to it by like 10 seconds:mad:. I watched him walk up to the truck.

Anyone ever use a V5 compressor? They have their own oil supply and they are plentiful. Most use a serp belt though.

Bump

did anything ever happen with this .....did anyone get to make a bracket? i'm in the research phase of OBA and if i could get a bracket made or photos and numbers i might just piece it together.....i'm looking at the Kilby kit, but i have no idea yet how badly expensive it is compared to what i could put it together for with all the time spent doing it that i don't have time to give it. i had a setup a long time ago that my friend did for me but that was a bit different. this particular "kit" would be just fine for my '90.

Last I knew Brett (sweetk30) had a list of parts to put one together..PM him about what he knows.

That is the reason I opted to just buy the "kit". I figured it would cost me more time and effort and that I could put that forth elsewhere in my rig and just buy the kit.

PM muddytazz, I recently gave him all of the dimensions from my bracket kit so he could build some.

oh cool man.....this search feature is frikkin great, thanks for the responses. i spoke to the Kilby owner on the phone for a while and he's waiting for the new owners to get thier stuff together and buy it so he can get out. says they're gonna keep it going but might take a while to get online....he seems pretty cool to me and we talked. i'd give him my business if that's easier for me like you did 4X4. i don't know if there's any inventory left though.

i'll be PMing Sweetk30 and muddytazz very soon. i'm gonna stuff a welder under the hood too......more research. i remember when the Premier welder rig first came out like 25 years ago :eek1:.....how do you like the kit 4X4? i know it's a loaded question, but do you still think it's worth it? i have too many projects going on right now too. thanks, Bill

There is nothing wrong with the kit at all and i'm very pleased with it. If you don't have the time to spend on running around to source some steel and then to fab the required brackets it is ALOT easier to just buy their kit.
