I swapped a TBI manifold, distributor, wire harness, all sensors, and ECM onto an '86 small block.

this '86 small block resides in my '74 k10.

the engine is low mileage, and i'm pretty sure it is running a stock cam.

So here's the problem: the engine runs real nice when its not in gear. i can rev it up real nice. it does stumble once in awhile.

when i put it in gear, and try to drive it, it runs horrible and stumbles a lot.

the computer was originally running an '88 5.7 liter SBC and a 700r4.
i pulled all the TBI equipment from the junkyard.

the transmission i'm running is a 400. i don't have the TCC wires connected to anything since the 400 is not equipped with a lockup torque converter.

i checked the SES light for codes, and all i'm getting is code 12.

does anybody have any thoughts on this?

did i possibly grab a ECM that had a burnt chip in it, or maybe something that i'm overlooking?

edit: i didn't install the A.I.R. system from the '88 into my truck. i'm pretty sure that doesn't really matter though.:dunno:

It's like deja-vu all over again! i swear I just read this somewhere else... :p:

What is the Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS hooked up to? What is the Neutral / Park switch hooked up to? What about pulling a Data Log file while driving the vehicle from the ECM?

Code 12 is OK. Without any error codes the ECM will flash 12.

the p/n switch is hooked up to a manual switch until i can get ahold of a better setup.

the vss is hooked up behind the speedometer. it uses that optic head that counts the revolutions of the speedometer cable.

the speedometer doesn't seem to be working though, so i need to pull the tail housing off the tcase to make sure that the speedometer gears aren't damaged.

i sort of thought that if the vss wasn't working, that the ECM would set a touble code.:dunno:

how do i pull the Data Log File?

I think the ECM you have is the 1227747? If so, what I would do is hook the Neutral / Park wire to Battery Negative / Ground ( - ). With the Neutral / Park wire connected to Ground, the ECM thinks the vehicle as parked or in neutral. When the ECM thinks the vehicle is parked or in neutral, the VSS can be un-hooked. It's OK to leave the Neutral / Park wire grounded for as long as you own the vehicle, or as long as you continue to use TBI.

If you can't Data Log, maybe you can get access to a scanner tool of some kind. I have an AutoXray scan tool. http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=94

The scan tool is a good tool. The scan tool will let you know what all the sensors are doing when the engine is running.

Here is a screen shot from my Data Logging. Cool stuff.

i'm going to try the Win ALDL program. i just need to purchase the data cable so that i can hook my laptop to the ECM.

and yes, i am using the 1227747.

does anyone know a good place online that would have that cable for sale?
