So I took my 66' into my tranny guy to see if he could solve my issue on my sm420 slippin when i downshift from 3rd to 2nd. He looks and says that ill more than likely have to drop the tranny so he can look at it. Ok no big thing i just put my th350 into my 3/4t yesterday not a big issue. So i look under the hood and of all the a$$ backwards knuckle draggin mouth breathing horrible wrong idea's i see that the ^%$#ing crossmember is riveted to the dam frame ?!?!:mad: To make matters worse there is very little room to work with a grinder if i can even get one underneath it.

Its kinda funny when you think about how they didn't think back in the day. It should be easy if you can you get an air chisel up there.

Always could use bungi cords or a ratchet strap!

They just do that so you get so overwhelmed/confused you just take it in and let them charge you 90 bucks an hour.

I'm gonna try with a air chisel but there's not a whole lot of room in between the frame and body but enough to maybe get a chisel or small torch in there. I mean im impressed that old a$$ tranny has help up for 40+ years, but on the flip side of the coin did they not think something could go wrong?

You think GM engineering was bad back in the 60s??
Look under a 2008 GM:eek1:

When my dodge got hit i was driving a 2008 gmc canyon 4 door 4x4. That thing was worthless as a honda. I popped the hood and was confused cause that inline 5 looks weird as hell. I hated it.

Could have been worse... the 4-cyl Colorado my old roomate had was anemic at best.

That dam canyon sucked gas about as bad as my burb too, every 3 days id have to put 10 in it. I spent almost a 100 bucks in gas alone for that thing.

Mad Burban,

I call BS.

You're complaining about a 42 year old truck. Do you really think that GM engineers thought their trucks would last 42 years?

It's still kicking. Think about this: Back in 1966 a 42 year vehicle would be a model T Ford.

I think you should thank them for building a vehicle that still runs 42 years later.

(By the way I own a 42 year old (1966) 427/425 HP Corvette. It would get its butt kicked by many '08 vehicles, but that's okay.)

I am glad they built one hell of a truck and i love to drive it, on the other hand i think the idea of riveting a transmission crossmember is not the brightest.

Do you realize the transmission comes out without the crossmember being removed?

Dude, you are lame. If you cant deal with simple problems like this, you shouldn't be driving an old vehicle. The gm engineer probably put rivet in the crossmember to keep people like you from removing it.

Bingo.
Its the same with all 60s and early 70s Corvettes with manual trannies.
Those crossmembers were welded to the frame from the factory and were completely non removeable....

But you're right, the trans comes out anyway.:haha:

On a '66 the transmission crossmember goes under the bellhousing with the tail of the tranny hanging in the air. If it's a 4x4 the divorced tcase has it's own removable crossmember.

Here you can remove the transmission and service it without affecting the motor since it will still be fully supported by the motor mounts and bellhousing.

how does an sm420 slip? I know the clutch can slip but that is a clutch issue not a transmission issue.

When it is in 3rd gear the shifter almost like pulls out but it stays in gear then when i downshift to 2nd it will pop in but it will sit there and grind the gears not horriblely bad but you can somewhat hear the gears not meshing right. As far as the whole crossmember thing goes ill figure it out eventually. I was going off of what my transmission guy told me who also owns a 66 and is one of the best guys in this town. He said it would be easier for me to drop the x-member and swap out the 420 for my 465 and just use a 69-72 cross member. I love the truck and im more than willing to work on it by myself. I know i can remove the tranny tunnel but from what i saw without crawling under neath it, i didnt think i would have enough room to pull it out the top.

Instead of slamming me and calling me lame how about you do what kenny did and accept me as a somewhat smart noob and offer constructive critiscm or advice not just post what you did. You dont know me nor do you know what challenges i face every day from the moment i wake up to the moment i go to sleep... just a thought take it as you wish dude
