First post ever;

I have a stock 87 blazer and I want to spend $1000 on it. Preferably towards aftermarket engine components to get some more power out of it. (unless there is something else badass I could do)

HELP ME! I need ideas.

Thanks for the help!

What's wrong with your motor? What's the plan for the blazer? Is it lifted?

Give some more details

Thanks everyone for the speedy responses.

There is nothin wrong with the motor, I just wanted to do some work on it to make it better! It is lifted 6" and I don't really have any intent to rock-crawl, however if I could climb hills easier and have more overall power that would be great!

6" lift i would imagine you'd benefit alot from some re-gear/axle upgrade. will give you an instant difference in power to the ground.

Thats what i'm thinking.

What tire size? Current Gearing?

You'll notice more "power" regearing in your situation than you will for 1000$ worth of engine work.

what these guys said what gears/ tire size ?

Regearing the axles should definitely be high on the list of things to do if it hasn't been done already.

What size tires do you have now?

I am currently running 35 inch tires on 16 inch rims. I have been meaning to go down a couple of tire sizes when I find the urgent need to spend all the money on new tires. Maybe going to some 285's or something. As for gearing; I am not sure of the current gear ration but I am pretty positive it is still stock highway gears.

So, it seems you all agree I should regear? Which ratio should I go to? I want to find a happy medium between brute towing-power and highway gears =D

On a 6" lift, i'd stick to 35's, and put 4.56's in there.

33's on a 6" are going to look goofy.

With an auto you should have 4.88s with 35s. Especially if you have OD.

Yah, or 4.88's. I'm running stock 3.73's and 33's, so im not perfect when it comes to gear ratios.

Curious what 4x4high's recommendation will be, as he runs 4.56's and 35's, although his motor has some extra grunt.

i would say bare minimum is going to be 4.10s. but those are on the light side of things and only if you do drop down to a 33". personally i'd stay around a 35. and go up to like a 4.56/4.88. if you have OD like said above, i'd probably go 4.88s. that will give you plenty of pull and the OD will keep you from revvin out hopefully.

Well the cheap way to regear with your truck is fine some 3/4 ton axles get some new rims and toss em on, That will get you 4.10s (usually). that will help alot and cost way less than a grand unless you completely redo the axles or aren't very good at finding parts.

But I agree with the 4.88s since you probably have an auto and its a 700 (do you have an auto?)

You will probably be fine spending money on your half ton stuff if you don't lock the rear. If you EVER plan on going bigger just swap the 3/4 ton stuff now

thats what i was thinking of when i said get the 4.10s. cuz that will get you the lil better axles and a lil better gearing. wouldnt be optimal. but it'd be a good start for what you have to work with now. :waytogo:

Alright so the general consensus is that I should stick with my 35 inch tires and re-gear to 4.88's....... anyone got a problem with that? (keep in mind im basing this decision purely off your feedback, I know little to nothing about any of this) haha

in a perfect world 488s are ideal. but 456 can be found in stock axles, and are a little easier and cheaper to get hold of.

I just went from 3.07's in 10bolts to 4.56's in 3/4 tons. With 36" surplus hummer tires and a 4 speed I run about 2500rpm to keep up with the semi's in the slow lane on the hy-way(speedo is broke lol). Besides the exaust & Edelbrock carb my 350 is boner stock and with the new gears the power is pretty darn good. I see 3/4 ton axle sets on Craigslist often for between $250-$500, far cheaper than re-gearing and freshening up 10 bolts lol. I have $300 into my axles. You may be able to buy seperately and save even more, I've seen 14 bolt rearends go for $75.

If I had $1000 I'd find a sweet CL deal on front & rear axles, make sure I had a nice healthy sounding exaust system, and button up any little BS thats wrong like leaky stuff or cracked windshields or whatever. If I had any money left I'd just buy "fun" stuff for it lol.
