Yesterday my 700R4 exploded on the highway throwing the rear shaft out the back. I'm interested in moving to a 465/205. Currently the truck is 700R4/ part time converted 203 with 4" lift and 33" tires. Here are my questions:

1. I have an idea of what I need in order to do it but don't know for sure. What kind of parts list should I have?

2. Is it best to get one at a junk yard, on craigslist or from a doner (which would be a problem because I don't have space for a parts truck)

3. What kind of total cost should I be expecting?

4. I'm pretty sure I will need new drive shafts right? If so what is a good source for them?

5. Last, this truck is a driver and light trail truck that won't ever have larger than 35" tires on it, so is the swap worth it?

I think that is it...

OK while the above post shows you how to install the clutch pedal doesnt really talk about everything else. What year truck do you have (more or less what year engine do you have), this dictates if you need a externally balanced flywheel or an interally balanced one. From 64-84 used the same crossmember. so you will need one of them also. You can go two different routes for the clutch linkage (mechanical vs hydro). It would be easier to find a parts truck and swap everything over than to piece things together. I couldnt have a parts truck so therefore i am have to piece stuff together and wasting some money. Great thing about a parts truck is you can sell the truck for scrap and get $2-400 back out of it (depending on how much scrap metal sells for in your area). You can't pin a cost on a swap like this b/c of the two routes you can go with the linkage and with the parts truck or to piece stuff together. And yes you will need new driveshafts. I have about $700 in mine including all the needed parts and a new clutch and flywheel minus driveshafts. But it can be done alot whole lot cheaper

If you still had the th350, I'd say swap. But, since you have overdrive already - I'd keep the 700r4. PM Greg Ducato. I believe he runs Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford, supposed to be a really good tranny shop.

If you decide to a manual swap and find a donor truck let me know. We can prob work out a beer and parts deal. You can keep it @ my place in Grapevine for a while.

If you go with a standard i may have what you are looking for in the way of a complete vechicle that is kind of in the way.

I am in the middle of doing this exact this same swap. So far it's not overly difficult. I'm two weeks into it and I'm nowhere near finished. Of course I am overly slow when it comes to wrenching!

2 words...Parts Truck. for decent size swaps like that i've found it easier to find a beater with the drivetrain you want. then you have all the parts there and its much easier to adapt to your rig then scrounging for everything separately. then you have the added benifit of parting the rest of the rig to recoup some money...

It can be done either way tho. the last sm465 swap i did i bought a complete set up with everything i needed. of course this was from a fellow K5er so you tend to get a better deal that way:deal:

The swap really isnt all that hard, you could get all the parts out of a truck with a 4spd already, i only have about 400 ito my swap.

The truck is a '73. Thanks for the comments.
