As if we don't have enough compressor threads around here but it's one tool most of us all have in one form or another.

I sold my old compressor and have saved up a bit to go with it and I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new unit for the garage. I'm really liking this Ingersoll Rand 3HP, 60 gallon setup. It's reasonably priced for getting 11.3 SCFM @ 90psi.

What say CK5? I have a 10% off coupon for lowes and they carry the same compressor so I'm going to see if they'll price match it with Tractor Supply's price and then I'll slap the 10% off coupon on top of it.

You guys know anything bad about these?

had mine 9 maybe 10 years never had a problem except when strap broke when moving to new house, it got wedged between truck and trailer. needed new head gasket and filter still works good if using impact does good does not like a da sander or air file recommend putting an auto drain on it

What model do you have? Same SCFM rating? I want to be able to run a little more than an impact. I can get a $300 compressor that'll run an impact...

What kind of air tools do you anticipate using alot? Air sanders, and die grinders use the most air other than that 11.3 SCFM will work great on most other tools. If you question any particular tool just look up the required SCFM rating for the tool and you'll quickly know if the compressor will work with it.

I use an impact and air ratchet 95% of the time but I have a sander, spray gun and some die grinders I use occasionally. I'll look up the air consumption and see how it stacks up.

Oh, 19,999 posts for ya' Scott. :)

So in my endless research on compressors in this price range I've been reading a lot of good reviews about the Kobalt compressors at lowes. They are no match for a true industrial compressor but for the price they're hard to beat.
For example here's one that has the same CFM rating as the Ingersoll Rand I'm looking at, has a longer warranty than the IR and has a higher working pressure. Not to mention it's $100+ less.

Now obviously $100 isn't going to sway me either way and I'd love to have an IR in the garage just for the sake of having a reputable name. But is the longer warranty and higher working pressure worth it?

Avery from my research I found that the two stage compressors have a longer life expectancy..that lowes unit is projected 5000 hours, the IR from TSC has 10000, and the two stage units I looked at were 12000+. Obviously the two stage is more efficient, higher pressure, longer life compressor, and has a larger motor. I did look at the 5hp/60gal IR unit at TSC, and was impressed with its numbers for a single stage.

Yeah a 2 stage would be nice but I don't want to spend more than about $600 which keeps me in single stage territory.

I'm fairly certain that the Kobalt compressor is actually a Campbell Hausfeld compressor (they're a good compressor). If you go back to Lowes look at the stamped ID plate on the compressor. I bought a Husky compressor from Home Depot and it is actually a Campbell Hausfeld compressor (stamped right on the ID plate).

This is the exact compressor I bought.http://www.homedepot.com/Husky/h_d1...Display?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=air

Avery that should take care of the majority of your air needs for a long time... the real airhog tools tend to be body tools... mechanic tools, even die grinders don't use nearly the air you use with say, sandblasting, a blowgun, DA or inline sander, etc do....

I ran a $400 60 gal oiless screaming banshee for about 12 yrs.. and it did damn good, other than the headache... it would fall behind here and there, but did fine for what most guys use em for... and I'm probably the worst you'll ever find when it comes to using lot's of airhog tools..

One thing I noticed on the Ingersoll Rand is it's 100% duty cycle so even if I'm pushing it I don't have to worry if it's on for extended periods of time. I can't find the duty cycle on the Kobalt but I'm guessing it's not 100%.
Well, I like the higher working pressure and cheaper price of the kobalt but I like the name/history and performance of the IR.

Not sure how this one will pan out but I think it's going to be the IR. It's not that big of a price difference and I'd hate to get the Kobalt then wish I'd spent $100 more on the IR.

that's kinda the way I felt with my stage 2... i was already spending 1200 for the quality of an IR, and an extra $100 would do a holy grail Quincy.. wtf not...

I am a tad leary of box store tools anymore.. after the whole Dewalt/homo depot issues.. not to say, I don't use em... my chop saw and shop vac are from the depot...

I headed over to Tractor Supply this morning and picked up the new compressor. They had a bunch in stock and comparing the Ingersoll Rand next to the Campbell Hausfeld made it an easy decision. Even though these SS series Ingersoll Rand's are their lower end hobby level stuff compared to their industrial line it was much nicer than the equivalent campbell hausfeld.

congrats!

Thanks, I thought I was going to have a heart attack on the way home. Tractor Supply is all the way across town from where I live and I took slow, non-busy surface streets all the way home making my dad look back and watch it since I don't have a rear view mirror on the dodge. :D

I would have preferred to just put it in the bed but I couldn't figure out how to get it unloaded once we got home with just the two of us. We were able to just walk it off the trailer using the ramps side by side this way.
