In 1992 I purchased a BFG 33x12.5 MT from Discount. since then the tire only has about 1000 miles and a lot of garage time.Thursday I notice that it was flat and that the side wall split. I took it to Discount to see if they could put a tube in it, they wouldn't. Then the salesman says, you did buy it from us right? I said of course. He said that we should be able to warranty it. To replace a 16 year old tire it cost me $40. You have to love Discount Tire.

didn't realize they went SOLELY off mileage/tread depth and not age at all...very nice.

You got lucky on that one, I ran into a big hassle over old style mud-terrains vs. new style mud-terrain KM's. They wouldn't warranty them after the new design was out. That was the last set set I bought from them and probably the last set of new tires I've purchased. Now with flea-bay and craigslist I always find deals from people changing to bigger rims, or taking them off trucks they bought and sold.

Technically if you read you warranty papers they could have told you to pound sand. There warranty period is only like 3 or 5 years but most of the time they don't worry about that unless the manager is a dick or you have abused a tire and they don't want to warranty is. Discount generally tries to make people happy though so most of the time unless you get an a-hole manager or you have clearly abused the tires they will take care of it. If you get one of those a-holes you can always go to a different store though and hope for better luck with a different store.

I bought that $25 "warranty" from discount when I got my tires. I figured at $125 (at the time) per tire, it was worth it.

Sure enough, later on, nail through the sidwall. No questions, they had me in the computer, new tire. Cost me $50 all said and done (old warranty price, add warranty for new tire) but well worth it IMO.

As mentioned, with every company, depends on who you deal with.

So it actually cost you $175 for that tire not $50. These warranties only seem to be worth it to me if you drive your car/truck in risky situation that can cause sidewall damage.

That is correct. Each tires price was $125. To get a "lifetime" no hassle warranty, it's another $25. As I recall they don't call it a warranty, I think they say it's a "certificate", but the end result is that it's a warranty for THAT tire. Once you use it, if you want another lifetime warranty, you pay the $25 for the new tire.

Be careful about what you THINK a tire company will warranty. Most will not cover ANY sidewall penetration. Both the nail in my tire, and the stick that went through a buddies brand new tire were on the road. His "warranty" was against manufacturing defects, not road hazard, so he got to pay for a brand new tire. His were even more pricey than mine.

As little as I drive my truck, these tires are going to last me a LONG time. One more tire and the warranties will have completely paid for themselves, let alone how much a 33x10.5R15 BFG AT/KO would run nowadays compared to what I originally paid.

The last tire I purchased from discount a BFG MT 33x12.5x15 was $254 including the road hazzard warranty. The replacement tire cost me $38 including the road hazzard. I have purchased several tires from discount and have never had any trouble.
