What would be involved with taking only the grill and radiator core support out? Not the entire front clip. (This is an 83)

Since i need a new trans, the engine could use some engine stand tuning AND i need a new radiator, i'm thinking this is a good way to go? Although, if too much work, i can do it the conventional way.

If i did do this and removed the engine and trans at the same time, would i need to undo the trans crossmember? (TH-350, 2wd)

It's not too bad. Besides removing electrical connections it's Just 2 body mounts. Then a bunch of bolts between the fender and core support. Also from the wheel well to core support. Having some different size extensions helps.

I think its less bolts and work to take the nose off in one piece...the wiring and removing the stuff on the inner fenders is the worst part..
Then nothing is in the way of the engine too once it is off..

Iirc, 4 bolts each side, washer line, hoses, battery, and wiring.

It's less work to pull the whole front clip, but pulling just the core isn't much more work and has advantages. Where do you put an entire front clip in your work space? I don't have that kind of room. I generally work alone, and even with an engine hoist and straps the front clip as one piece is brutally awkward...and there is a real risk of dropping or damaging it.

Pulling just the core allows you to comfortably complete the work by yourself, without eating up a bunch of square footage you probably have earmarked for the engine and trans once they're out.
