Greetings ladies and gentlemen,

Apologies for what I'm about ask but I don't have time to do alot of digging to find the answers, so I'm hoping you can bring them to me.

I recently inherited my late father's prized possession a 1984 GMC K2500 with a 6.2l Diesel (I hope that's correct my dad was the Chevy guy I leaned towards the dreded blue oval). The 6.2l is shot according to what my dad said many years before he passed, but as one of the stipulations my brothers placed on me getting the truck is that I had to get the truck back on the road. As you all know the economy right now is going to crap so everyone needs to start tightening the belt. I did however purchase a 1987 K1500 with a 350 sbc from my father in law. Through my research should bolt right on bolt right up, but beyond that I know nothing.

If anyone could point me to some solid information I would be grateful.
Thank you

If you have any questions feel free I'm an open book.

If it were me I would swap engine trans and t case from k1500 into k5.
Use engine frame purchase from k1500, is the 350 a tbi, or carburetor? 87 truck is mid year change to gmt400.
Drive shafts from k5 have decent chance of working. If both trucks used same type trans.
Not up on fuel system changes, the line routing is different from gas to diesel. Someone here will know

Welcome to CK5

Drivetrain is pretty much plug and play between those two trucks. The fuel system is probably the job you want to get right. I'd consider swapping the entire gasoline tank from the donor. A diesel tank that has been sitting could be full of algae and other fun shit. Make sure to swap gauge clusters or at least swap out the "diesel fuel only" fuel gauge. I'd do the whole cluster and get rid of the "wait to start" portion too.

Super easy swap...

Trucks changed in 87, Gm called them 88 but they came out mid year. Idk if GM actually labeled a truck 87.
So the donor could be gmt400 and not much from the body will be helpful.
Since fuel tank should be replaced get a new fuel injection tank, then you can use any internal fuel electric fuel pump, for which ever fuel system you choose to run

87 were still squares, the only blurry area was the intro of TBI. 88 was the intro for the GMT 400, but only the 1/2 and 3/4 tons. The K5, Burb and Crew Cab were still square til 91.

Yeah the op say he got a k1500 as a donnor, so that's says truck to me. And the 88 truck came out in mid 87. I was working at a gm agency at the time. Totally new systems, and the service manuals had all old information, so much fun.

The 88 truck may have come out a few months early, but it was never called an 87. I think it's safe to assume the OP bought a "square" parts rig to fix his inherited soon to be ex diesel square.

I bought an 88 C1500 brand new and remember the half assed roll out of the GMT 400 platform at the time. GM really screwed the pooch between summer 87 and winter of '90. Kinda like Dodge with their "classic" Ram pick-up right now, but worse.

So my memory is not perfect, but I don't think there was an 87 truck. It was more than a few months early. I do remember that.

Well the 87 sales brochure shows an 87 full size. I probably thought they were 86's when I was working on them.

Thank you guys, I am very appreciative of the input thus far. It seems like I need to identify exactly what I have as far as a donor truck.

I had an '87 for a bit. Reg cab shortbed 4x4 manual trans, it was broke down and non-running but I shoulda fixed it up. It was a square and had tbi and a hydraulic clutch.

I see where the mix up is. When gm brought out the 87 Squarebody truck with the TBI engines, the were R/V series, not C/K series. Your donor truck being an 1987 4wd squarebody truck, it is a V series truck. Still a square body, and many parts interchange with the older trucks. The R/V series continued until the squarebodys were discontinued. The C/K series continued with the GMT 400 trucks. Carry on with your 6.2 swap to TBI 350 very doable.

Hope that clears things up. Continue with your questions about your swap plans.

Did your father give any indication as to what exactly is wrong with the current engine?
