My daughters Nissan (07) has a service engine light, and I want to get a tester to see what the code is, and how to clear it.

I'd like to find a tester that will work with 96+.

Are the 96+ units able to work on most cars/trucks?

It would be more useful to have one that covered most vehicles.

What do you know about them, and what ones work good?

How much money we looking at for a good unit....I'm no mechanic so top of the line isn't required. just an economical solid unit.

Most of the OBD2 scanners will at a minimum scan global, lots do scan and monitor the manufcture side as well. I think that close attention should be paid to the features: does it scan all systems, PCM,airbag, abs, and bcm
another important feature will be , is it LAN or CAN compliant.

As a quickie i use a Launch Brand scanner at work , when our solus is being used, the launch set me back $270, and does have the features listed above, however it is no guarentee it would for instance have code definitions, or communication with all modules on all vehicles, generally i can always count on it to read and clear PCM DTC's, and generic continuous monitor status. Personally if i had to do it again id save my 270 and have put it towards a solus for myself- but thats me and i use them all damn day and must rely on said scanner

working with a PCM tard here, can you explain
BCM
LAN
CAN
DTC'S

And say you only need to use it once every 3-6 months, what would you buy?

Thanks

bcm- body control module
dtc's- diagnostic trouble codes
can-controller area network(allows communication between modules-can and lan go hand in hand)

dunno brother i have used snap-on modis, solus, and of course the annemic red brick MT2500, and my Launch

I think the recommendation should come from someone who has used a broder spectrum of economical scanners
