ok im chaniging the cap and rotor on my truck (350tbi) and a bolt broke off for the distributor cap bolt and ive tried needle nose vicegrips but they just strip off. so what do i do? could i put the new distributor cap on with just one bolt?

I would not consider running with one bolt. The cap can/will easily tilt and the rotor and cap will mutually assist each others destruction.

Were it me, I'd pull the distributor and get some real vise grips on it. That doesn't work, disassemble, maybe some localized heat. Failing that, new distributor. Not like pulling a distributor is THAT much work. Not fun, but not real hard either.

Good time to at least replace the pickup coil, since the distributor has to come out to do that, and they are fairly inexpensive.

unfortunetly i dont have the cash for that right now but i need to drive it daily so ill figure something out

Most garages here would zip-tie the cap on and say nothing....but it works--I see many distributor caps held on that way on cars & trucks that come into my friends shop for tune ups!....................................................................................................I busted a cap screw off in the 93 Caravan's 3.0 I drive a few years ago.......I was able to drill it out,but due to the lack of room for the drill, the bit skidded off the bolt and I ended up with a half a bolt and a hole slightly off center in the distributor housing...I was able to enlarge the hole in the cap and use a self tapping screw to hold the cap on--my friend tells me I should have put the old cap back on to use as a drill guide--it had a brass insert in the plastic, that would have let me not go off center probably..:doah:..now he tells me.......................................................................................................I tried using vise grips on the shank of the screw, that was barely sticking up above the housing, and all it did was chew it away, until nothing was left for them to grip--then I had no choice but to drill it....if I had access to a MIG welder,I could have plopped a 3/16" nut over the busted screw's shank, and welded the nut to it,then it would probably have came right out................

lol after this post i had noticed a actually broke both bolts off and i was pissed so i didnt even bother looking on here i broke em off as much as i could with vice grips ans steadily drilled for like 15 min and its held together by one bolt and i took the truck on the bumpiest dirt road in my state and it held up fine

Add a zip tie to the side with the missing bolt, for extra insurance!...and call it "done"....until you come across another "good" distributor,a junkyard one probably wont cost all that much...(make sure the cap screws will come out BEFORE you pull it out or buy it though!..
