my truck has little rust spots here and there on fenders and quarters due to no one clear coating the paint but they arent rusted thru yet its still solid. if i was to paint the whole truck using a roller i dont know if i should just take the rust spots to bare metal then paint over them? i dont wanna prime the whole truck but if i role the paint on should i sand the rust spots and prime the rust spots? or just sand and paint? should i use any fillers or bondo?

If it's surface rust I think you're best to sand down to bare metal as best you can, then spot blast to get whatever pitting you have also clean. A mist of Zinc oxide then go from there.

Hopefully Ryoken will chime in here, but rattle can prime over bare isn't the best (either is a roll on paint job...but it's your truck obviously)

I just bought some of eastwoods fast etch rust desolver. Stuff seems to really kill rust. $26 or so for a gallon i think. Wear a respirator and do it outside though cuz the fumes are nasty. Its an acid based desolver.

The real question is what are you looking for from this truck? Are you restoring it? Most likely not if you're thinking about rolling on paint. And do you plan to restore the truck ever? Answering these will denote what paint to use and how to surface prep what you have.

As an example, I am in the process of sanding down the body and patching some holes and slapping on a coat of Rustoleum. But my truck is a trail truck and is constantly being bounced off trees and such. Certainly far from resto condition and will never be. I can never go back to a "real" automotive paint after this. But I knew that going in.

well i plan on just getting a decent looking rust free paint job the truck is in very restorable condition but im not doing that right now its my dd but i also like to hit the trails with it so i just wanted to know what the best thing to do to get rid of the rust spots before i roll on some paint. i realize in the next 5-7 years im going to do a good for me paint job after this but right now i just wanna get rid of the surface rust so its paintable not looking for a show paint job just a rust free paint job for now

what i think im gunna do is sand the rust spots to bare metal with my rotary tool then prime the bare metal with a can of rustoleum primer and then paint the whole truck with rustoleum saftey red roll on. if any of you have any opinions or suggestions on this plan please share them. remember this is a temporary job im not looking for a show truck i am going to be wheeling the truck.

Once you apply a non catalyzed paint you can never go back to real paint again without stripping the truck back to bare metal and starting over. If you are ok with that then you may continue.

I would sand the rusty spots with a high speed sander like a die grinder with roloc sanding discs. A DA would be a better tool for the job. Plus with the DA you can scuff the whole truck to prep the surface fairly quickly. Rustoleum is pretty easy to work with and very forgiving but will never harden like a catalyzed paint. It will always be kinda soft in comparison.

Rust should be flat out removed or it will come back. I have come to terms with the fact my truck will not last forever. In that case I sanded down the surface rust and pitted rust as best I cared to do and then hit it with Rustoleum rusty metal primer. I had some rot holes I cut out and patched in new metal. I hit those spots with self etching primer. Topped it all off with Rusto smoke gray sprayed through a Wagner paint gun. Check out my thread if you want, it's called "the trail truck bodywork experiment". But heed my warning at the top of this post.

yea my truck is starting to rust at the cab corner but i dont know the basics of welding what welder? what current? or i would do them my self but i think im going to try taking the rust off with bare metal and prime the bare spots and role the truck with rustoleum saftey red thanks for the help
