Ok so i need a bigger gas tank... or another one. my 79 K10 has a 16gal tank and im tired of having to fill up every 5 days or carry gas cans on long trips. how hard would it be to add another one, or a fuel cell in the back under the bed and wire it to a switch?? or is there a 30 or 40 gal tank that could work?? has any body done this or some thing similar to a C/K truck. maybe i could use a blazer tank or some thing?? let me know what cha all think?? thanks

Couple of options:

1 Saddle tanks. I believe, but I could be wrong, that you already have a saddle tank, so you could add the second tank and a tank switching solenoid.
2. Blazer tank mounted under the bed. This would require some work to get a filler neck setup, but should be doable. You would still need to have a switch if you wanted to maintain the original tank as well. This could give you a boost of either 28 or 31 gallons, depending on the tank.
3. Fuel cell in the bed. This would be the spendiest solution, assuming you use picknpull for the first two. This would require you to mount it in the bed then run lines. Not sure if this would work off the stock mechanical pump, or if you would need an electric to get the flow going.

I think I'd go digging at the pic-n-pull and find a saddle take to mount on the driver's side. The truck you pull the tank off of should have all the necessary switches, brackets and lines to add it to your truck.

Past that, I agree with lectric about possibly adding a blazer tank. The only problem with this is that it will take up where the spare tire was originally carried. Not sure if that is a problem, as most people don't carry the factory spare there anyways.

Had the same problem w/ my 71 blazer.....found a 32 gal (?) tank from a 78 blazer that was in good shape, fabbed up a new crossmember and doubled my driving range. I did move it forward a bit for better ground clearance. Thought about raising the tank up into the bed, but decided I would rather skid plate than lose the bed area. Easy job if you have basic building skills. Make sure you use fuel line.

My tires are too big to carry the spare under the truck. i saw a trap door fuel nozzle door on line for the bed. it could be a pain to use but so could having fill up then do a U turn and fill up again if i mount one on the drivers side. thanks for the input ill head out to the pick-n-pull and see what i find.

If you only have one tank then the easy thing would be to go find a tank for the other side.

Lots of guys have put blazer tanks under the bed of those trucks. I am going to attempt to put a 40 gallon burb tank under the bed of my dually. I am pretty sure both of my tanks are 19 gallon tanks. Not sure have never fueled it up before. Soon I hope soon

Ok i have 3 or so tanks picked out and i would like to get some thoughts on them but i am new here and i need at least 5 posts to post a url so this should be 3 or 4

this is the option i like most. not sure if it will fit between the frame rails over the rear axle??

this is my second option its not for my specific year but i dont see why it would not work.

i cant up the exact tank but about half way down the page is a stock 16 gal tank that i could just mount on the driver side.

as long as the tank i select fits the only other question is how to wire it all up so it i can switch between the two tanks. i know there is a switch for it i just have to find one and figure out how it works and wire it up. i have little to no experience with fuel systems but i cant imagine it is all that complicated on a carbureted truck.

The switch themselves and the solenoid are very simple. They have two inlets and a single outlet. The switch is also a very simple three wire design with a single power feed, then a pair of wires going to the solenoid that switch between the different tanks. Summit and even your local parts stores should have a simple universal setup.

That's the route I took. I'm still using the factory (although it's been replaced so it's in good shape) mechanical fuel pump and it doesn't have any problems drawing fuel from my cell in the bed area up to the carb.
I just got barbed adapters that go onto the -8AN fitting off the cell and ran fuel proof rubber hose down to the hard-lines on the frame so it was cheap and easy.

This is my vote since you can save weight, put the tank in the bed were it's safe and you can get whatever shape/volume you want.

thanks man, good info.

The 40 gallon tank is a stock burb tank. I will try to look and take some measurements tomorrow I know it won't fit in a blazer because its longer and runs into the axle. A stock blazer tank (31 gal)I know will fit back there, I have seen it done many a time. Mostly on lowered trucks
