I just bought a 17' Osagian aluminum canoe and I'm not sure how to haul it on my K5. I don't have a rack or anything on mine, I was thinking of just buying some of those kids noodles and slicing them open and putting around the edges of the canoe that touches my K5 and strap it front and back.

2 things, I dont have one that will work easily with it, and some of the places I will be putting in would be hard to get a trailer to.

17 Foot is a big canoe. For somethign that long (and heavy) , i wouldnt' really want to put it on a fiberglass top, even though it would probably support it fine,

I would buy /build a hitch and front bumper rack, kinda like a parasail rack. If you DIY it would be pretty cheap, strong, and removable. Like this in the high position, front and back http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_19670_19670

Too bad your not hauling it with a suburban. We put my buddies 15 foot fishing boat inside my burb with the tailgate down. Only three feet of the boat was sticking out past the truck. We just put a little red flag on the end. Yeah I would just strap it to the top with some cumber links and ratchet it down. Those fiberglass tops are pretty darn tough. Plus yours isn't a full vert so I would think you have a bit more strength up their. Or even better! Take off the top, put a roll cage in and fab up a cool mount off of the cage.

Only thing that would suck about that is every thing dripping down when you pull it out of the river. No matter how careful we are we always manage to get mud, sand and water in our canoes, thats why im sticking with the trailer method.

I do the noodle idea with my kayaks. Throw in 2 ratchet straps (local trip) across the front and back through the doors or 4 (high speed) adding one front and one back and its just as good as a roof rack.

I am going to build something to attach to the receiver hitch in rear and keep it up off the fiberglass in the back about an inch or so, I'll take pics when I'm done.
