OK, I'm getting ready to replace the rusted and clogged muffler on the 73 and I'm looking for recommendations. I'd like something that has a little sound to it like some stock vehicles do, so not exactly silent, but I definitely don't want anything loud. I have a single 3" 50 series on the 78, and its not what I consider obnoxious (like the ratty glasspacks that it came with) but its definitely not what I want for a road tripping daily driver. Full verts aren't exactly the most insulated and sound dampened things there are, no sense making it worse than it has to be.
I've been watching youtube videos of different mufflers but everything still seems overly loud. The 73 has a stock original 350 that was converted to TBI a few days ago. One of two of the turbo mufflers I've seen looked promising with fiberglass matting, but I don't want to throw away money buying one that will be too loud when I put it on. I'd like to go 3" but stick with a single exhaust (already have the piping). If you have any videos, please share!

I am with you wife hates muffler on my K5 and it is 1/2 as loud as everyone put's on there trucks in the south. So looking to tone mine down to make wife HAPPY!

My white 76 was the worst. I mean, it sounded amazing tone-wise, but was way too loud. It was long tubes fed directly into a pair of 3" single chamber 10 series flowmasters, then into turndowns right under the front seats. Between those and the whiny gear drive, it sounded like a drag car coming up the street

I like my MBRP quiet tone. Point the louvers forward. Video is in my suburban thread. It sets off zero car alarms.

A couple of turbo mufflers I recycled from my buddies 63 Impala Convertible totally changed the tone of the 350 in my old 75. I had a pair of recylcled thrush welded mufflers on it before and lost one on a snow wheeling run. This was with the exhaust dumping under the truck in front of the rear axle. The turbos made it almost silent compared to the muscle car sound the thrush welded mufflers provided. It was too quiet and I like to hear the truck as it's accelrating.

Consider this too, run the pipes all the way out over the axle and dump at the sides under the quarters behind the rear wheels. The further the outlet the less loud it sounds from the front seats. Dumping under the truck just lets the sound bounce off the ground and right back up into the floor. I noticed the difference on the 91 of mine. Not wanting to have my 5.3 be silent I went with the the thrush welded mufflers with 2.25 duals and a crossover behind the t-case. Full tailpipes out to behind the shackle flip brackets and a 90 to the side. The difference in the sound of the exact same mufflers was noticable. You still can hear it have that "flowmaster burble" to the sound, but it wasn't as tinny or loud. Under acceleration, the 75 sounded like a beast even though the 350 was wheezy and worn out, but you couldn't hear yourself think. It quieted down at cruise, but you knew it was there. The 91 by comparison can still be heard under accleration, but it's not off putting or with any drone. Cruise at highway speeds and I can talk on my phone through the bluetooth on my radio with no problems. I couldn't do that before.

Here's a short video from the driver's seat taking a tuning run into the mountains. Put headphones on as you can hear it better. Both windows were down on the run so you got some wind noise and the rattle is my front plate sitting on the dash.

IMO however, the OEM muffler from the later K5's better reflect technology, allowing you to use the larger diameter single exhaust. I assume the fitment is the same regardless of vehicle year, I don't think the floor changed much where the muffler goes.

I have seen no testing that shows any aftermarket exhaust that is quieter than the OEM, and Walker supposedly makes theirs as it was factory. I believe Borla is one that sells "quiet" mufflers, still not as quiet as OEM.

I have been considering this muffler when I get my build running. Has a 2.5 inch in and 3 inch out, 2 into one setup. It has a lot of anti-drone technology and I figure that the short wheelbase of the K5 is going to need all the help it can get and not be too restricted. I'm planning on trying to make mine as quiet inside as possible without hindering the performance, just because I am going to convert it to my daily driver at some point, as well as being a bit of a cross country hauler from time to time. I remember how noisy my 77 was and while I was younger then, it still kind annoyed me at times, especially when going down the road at high way speeds.

I have a VT muffler on my car. I tried a few things and found 3" exhaust difficult to quiet down without resorting to restrictive mufflers. The VT really is quiet at idle, really gives no drone and really does make some noise at WOT. However, mine rattles for a minute after each cold start. Some users don't report this, but as usual, YMMV.

If you really want it quiet, there is only one exhaust product that gives true zero noise:

I wonder if the rattle is that Valve inside that is supposed to stop the drone. I have heard that it does that on some units but what I read is you can tell if it does it before you install it by shaking the muffler around and if you hear it then take it back and get it replaced. I was thinking of just finding a location that sells them so I can not have to wait in case that happens.

So far its between the Walker and turbo. I don't mind a little sound, but spend most of my time during the week offroad in the mountains and hate to have it too loud out there, don't wanna spook the wildlife :)

I learned recently the length of tailpipe after the muffler makes a big difference. I have a MagnaFlow that I like. I added 2ft to the tailpipe before Blazer Bash and it made a huge difference. I probably just about doubled the length of it.

I liked the dynomax super turbo. Never ran it as a single though
Is that the one with the fiberglass packing in it? I've noticed some turbos have it, some dont.

@mrk5 I plan on always having a full length tailpipe on this truck, over the axle and out the side just like stock, just gotta keep it up high enough that I don't tear it off again!
