I had to run a new line from my master cylinder and I used the pre-flared straight steel tube from the parts store. Problem is the new line has what looks like a 1/4" male fittings and the master cylinder looks like a 1/2" female fitting. 3 separate parts stores have turned up no solutions. It seems like an easy fix, find a 1/4 female to 1/2 male inverted flare adaptor but everyone at the parts stores say it's a funny fitting. Anyone ever run into this problem or have a work around.

yep .

cut off end and swap on old nut and re-flare the end .

I do this all the time.

otherwise good luck on the hunt for the adaptor.

That was my exact plan until the original fitting never removed itself from the trailer brake adapter due to galled threads. I think it's a 7/16 female inverted flare to 1/2 male inverted flare. But who knows, its apparently some form of alchemy to make this happen. (shakes fist)

o.k. then .

I know my local napa has change over adaptor short lines 3-4 inch long that have master fitting on 1 end and then common American thread on the other.

copy from napa site on aluminum/plastic master Brake Master Cylinder Line Thread Size : 1/2"-20, 9/16"-18

I found good selection of brass line adapters at Autozone of all places for my master cyl,and they were only 1.59 each, they used to be very costly IF you could find the ones you needed in the past...they also stock a fitting assortment wuth those "special" line nuts you can flare onto the tubing yourself now too in blister packs..other stores also stock the adapter lines Sweet K30 mentioned too...

I remember having to trudge thru junkyards looking for those "weird" sized line fittings after ruining my originals trying to remove them--and failing to find any adapters at part stores..GM liked putting them on the master cyl. lines and on the proportioning valve too...just to ruin your sunday when you planned to have all the lines fixed in time for work monday morning..yaa--RIGHT!..:doah:..it pays to save things like this when you part out a truck or scrap one...

The master cylinder will either be 1/2" or 9/16" pipe thread, yes, depending on whether it's the front or rear circuit. You can get ends for 3/16" or 1/4" tube in both sizes. Edelmann sells them onesies, you can get these at a good auto parts house, or Summit sells a big mix pack:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-220115 (for 1/4" tube)

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-220137 (for 3/16" tube)

Edelmann:

probably look at "Standard Steel Nut - Inverted Flared", part #121xxx.

Edelmann also makes adapters from X to Y but it sounds like you're flaring your own.
