Well this is a first for me and not sure what I did. Saturday went out coyote huntin, I was in my new to me 2000 Silverado 4x4 1500 when I needed to cross a big ravine. I had done it in the past with some ease but it was a first with this truck. I put it in 4hi thinking I would be okay (spun out). Switched to 4lo still spun out, gave it more throttle and I hear a loud BANG! I thought one of my blocks came out as I just got a lift on the truck. Got to level ground, I inspected the lift, nothing was out of place. So I was done with trying it started going to another stand when I hear a loud clunk/bang noise every time I let off the gas and then accelerate again. I get out of the truck looking at my wheels and lift again. I tell the wife to drive it forward and back while I look at it trying to find out what I had done. I notice when she gave it gas the truck would rev up and not move for a second then a loud BANG! The truck would move on its own I was thinking I broke something in the rear end. So we start heading back to my Dad's property couple miles away to inspect it some more, also thinking how am I going to get it home (100miles back to home), Get to the prop looking at everything then I realize when I bought it the slip yoke was making a clunking noise when I would put it in drive or reverse. I had the dealership I bought it from look at it they greased it up saying that was all that it needed. But I guess that is a real common problem with these year trucks. So I inspect the slip yoke. I have the wife put it in drive. The drive line spun 360 degrees before it caught a gear in the rear end that is where the loud BANG! Noise was coming from. So I suspect the slip yoke is shot but I am no expert at rear ends as this is a first for me. I still needed to get it home and I had no tow or anyone close to tow me home. So I decided to take a chance on it hoping it would make it as long as I went slow. Nope soon as I got on the highway I lose power to the rear end (truck just rev’s up and wont move under its own power spins freely). I got it home 100 mile drive going 35 down the highway in 4hi/ front wheel drive. I know that was probably not the smartest thing to do I had no one that would tow me and did not have the money to get towed. It made it home just fine. But when I parked it in the driveway I noticed the rear end was leaking from the gasket. Now I am clueless on what is wrong. I am going to have the dealership look at it today as I bought a warranty with the truck and they already know about the slip yoke issue. I am hoping that is all that is wrong with it but now with the rear end leaking I am not sure what is wrong. If anyone can help me out with what you think I did I appreciate it? Also sorry for the long write up.

Must be a G80. Gov lock blew up, you will probably at least need a new carrier, hopefully the gears are ok.

I know what they are talking about regarding the slip yoke, but that is not the issue you have with the truck. The rear axle is shot and most likely pieces of metal with fall out when the cover is pulled. Chunks probably flew around and hit the cover knocking the seal loose which is causing the leak.

they call them gov bombs for a reason. Pop the cover off and take a look, might be cheaper to find a used rear end.

Dang thanks guys. Did some research today and that is what it sounds like. I hope the dealership will stand by the warranty I bought with the truck. I will be getting it towed to the dealership today and won’t know till probably tomorrow or later if they cover that kind of repair.

If they don't, check around for options as suggested. Junker rear ends, upgrades, all sorts of stuff will probably be cheaper than their price.

However, since they did sell you a warranty, they might be reasonable even if its not covered.
If its not covered, and you can wait, get a firm price from them and post it here for suggestions.

Hey thank you I will do so. If the warranty does not cover it I most likely will be doing the work myself. I will probably go with something else other then the gov loc if I can. Need to do some more research about what will fit.

Need to do some more research about what will fit.

Well, if you read enough here, you will find that most anything will fit if you try hard enough.
Up to and including 5 ton military axles.........

But the gov-locks are one of the most replaced axles. From what I can tell, being as I have never had that problem. I run Fords.........
It seems they are reasonably strong in general use and heavy pulling. Where they generally give up the ghost, is when asked to lockup at speed.

They tend to not lockup at first, then try to when one wheel is spinning fast. That is when they earn their nickname of Gov-Bomb. The locking parts cannot handle the sudden jolt.
