Can you install a new seal from the outside by just prying the old one out and hammering a new one in?

I need to replace the output shaft seal on a NP208 Transfer Case

Unless you have some weird one off 208, you can pop the old one out and tap the new one in. If you still have leaks after the seal is replaced...check the slip yoke, it could be worn out.
