Wanted to install the Edelbrock off road needles for the carb so I can handle the bumps and angles a little better. I have a Edelbrock 1406 – stock 350. So I pulled the carb, first thing I noticed was the floats were hanging down around 2 inches ….. should only be around 1- 1.25. The other float measurement was ok and close to spec.

Ok.. so I proceed and installed new needles.. while I was working on it I installed a new accelerator pump , new choke, plus new gasket.

Got it all back together turned it over for a few times and it started running. Went on a test drive.. let it get good and warm. Everything seems fine accept I now have a very slight hesitation when I hit the gas from a stand still. Also a slight hesitation sometime when it hit the gas in park.

I’m thinking accelerator pump - so I call Edlebrock – they said yes it is.. and to move the latch UP one notch to the top so the truck get a bigger shot of fuel when I stomp on the gas. I currently have it in the middle – which is the same place it was before and probably with most STOCK 350's. Just curious as to why the off road needles would require a different adjustment on the accelerator pump ? Sound right ?

At a guess, the float levels are slightly different from what they were, or something shifted slightly when you were rebuilding everything.

I moved the accelerator pump notch to the top notch (closet to the hood) Seems to make it a little worse .. I could have been getting too much fuel to begin with. I'll try the bottom notch and see what that does.

Where did you get the off road needles?? I cant seem to find anything saying that off summit.I bought their rebuilt kit and new floats for the heck of it, and im placing a small order so I figure if im gonna rebuild it, I should make it angle friendly.

Edit: Nevermind I found them I think. THese http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-1465/ ??

Changing the hole used for the pump will alter the shot amount but you need to check the linkage has no slack. If needed bend the rod to adjust so the second the throttle is hit you start shooting fuel in.

A vacuum leak, however slight, can cause a hesitation off idle also...be sure the base gaskets fit the manifold right and were not damaged during the install...also the Edelbroaks I had ,some ran better with the vacuum advance hooked to manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum...

Did you check that float for any gas inside it??--it may have been "sinking" instead of just not adjusted right..shaking one will show up any gas inside one,it'll slosh around...

Ok.. the come to find out the brand new accelerator pump I installed wasn’t the exact same as the one I took out. The spring on the new one was a little longer. So I installed the old pump back in the carb and adjusted the float level to actual spec … instead of slightly lower as some suggest for the off road needles.

Seems to be better now.

Have you tested it at any angles yet?? Im just wondering how they work and if I should get them. I have the same carb on mine.

Ninja please.

They are only 14 bucks shipped from amazon. :waytogo:

Not the $$$ its I dont wanna mess with it if they are no good lol. Ive never touched a vehicle carb before, so im kinda scared to take it apart lol.

I never have either... but those carbs are real damn easy. I really dont off road this truck that much.. but I figured since I was taking it apart to check float levels, etc anyway.. I would install the off road needles.

BTW - if you truck runs good now..and does what you want.... dont screw with it.

Well I havnt brought it to the dunes yet... Thats the only reason I was thinking about it. I guess I could just wait. But im placing an order for some VC gaskets so ill toss these on top of that anyways. Ive already got a rebuild kit and float kit at home so what the heck may as well do it up good when I do it. Anything else I should throw in for cheap while im placing an order?? (yes im keepin it)

EDIT: Its on my 408sbc by the way

personally if your truck is running fine.. good response, etc.. I wouldn't take it apart. you try to do some good and end up dropping a spring down the intake or something...then your screwed.

Ok well ill leave it till it gives me issues. But I already have the rebuild kit that I ordered a long time ago so ill wait till it craps on me I guess lol
