I try to baby my 2006 GMC 2500HD 4WD Duramax but last weekend had to follow someone across some remote property and ran onto a big pine stump that was partially covered and could not be seen. The impact was subtantial, front end of the truck was thrown upward, and came to rest onto of the stump resting on the Allison transmission cross frame brace. I shoveled out from under the stump so as to let it drop down in the sand and free the truck. Once free of the stump and a slight tug by a buddy and we went on.

On the way home my "Check Engine" light came on. I stopped and checked all, couldn't find any obvious problems but did notice the transmission cross brace is bent upward in the middle about an inch from where it hit the stump. I am guessing this has slightly raised the back end of the engine and trans.

Took the truck to dealer, they checked the code, and said it was an EGR malfunction code, and is not uncommon. They cleared the code and said drive it and see if it comes on again, and if so they would have to troubleshoot it and fix it. I did not tell the dealer about the stump incident or bent trans brace.

I am probably going to order a new trans brace and replace it myself if not too complicated, but am wondering if any other damage has been done or could be done if driven with the bent brace. Any opinions or ideas?

How much of a job is it to replace the brace?

Thanks for any information, Dave

Just be thankful you didn't catch your transmission oil pan or filter... I found a large rock out in the mountains in the middle of the night about a month ago. Put a large dent in my tranny oil pan, and split the transmission filter wide open, made it another mile before my truck ran out of ATF, leaving it totally disabled.

Fortunately, I had my quad with me, and was able to ride the rest of the 20 miles to camp rather than walk it, haha

Anyways, I bent my transmission crossmember pretty good too, and it hasn't seemed to have any effect on the truck.

I am not familiar with the EGR on this Duramax engine. Can anyone give me some places to look for wires, hoses, etc. that could have been dislodged, disconnected, or damaged in this stump hitting incident? A link to some pictures or diagrams would probably help a lot.

The new transmission cross frame brace has been ordered, should be here today. I'll do the change out myself. Maybe when the new brace is in place and the engine/trans is back in the normal level position, the EGR problem will go away. It is possible the EGR problem is not related to the incident, but the check engine light came on shortly after I pounded the stump.

Thanks, Dave

The EGR is on the pass side top of the motor
Here's a pic with a bunch of the crap removed- It's number 1 in the pic. From there you can follow the egr cooler and see where it dumps into the turbo area of the exhaust. The crossmember might have bumped the exhaust and pulled the v clamp loose on the turbo.:wink1:

EGR failures are relatively common. There is a reprogram and a cleaning procedure the dealer can do. P0401 p0403 p046c are some of the codes.

The new transmission cross frame brace member came in today and I got it changed out. Now that the engine and trans is back to original level and position I am curious to see if the EGR code comes back after clearing. It probably will and I will have to take it to the dealer to see what needs to be done.
