Think I have a knocking rod or piston slapping.. Help!

My 700R4 went out when I was driving from PA to Michigan damn mountains got my old truck. I burned up the 3-4 clutch pack everything else looked pretter good.

I knew I had the engine reving higher than normal but didn't really think about it to much I had a fresh oil change in it before the run.

Before I yanked the transmission out to rebuild it I heard what I thought was a low end knock or possible piston slapping.

Again I figured it might be trans related.

I got the trans in the other day got everything bolted up and took it out for a drive today.

Once I get to about 40-45 mph It is knocking bad, Can't really tell where but it seems to be passenger side bottom end.

I have no noise at Idle or if I rev the motor this only happens when a load is on the engine driving it.

Starts out like a tick tick noise and then hits in as a louder knocking.

Sugestions please.

I'm thinking New motor or at least a rebuild but Im sure I can figure out something better to put in the truck than the Old 350 TBI.

I checked the oil it is dark not real good looking has less than 2,000 miles since the change.

Could this be the knock sensor not working?

I haven't checked for codes because I have not had a Check engine light

Any other ideas to try and Isolate it?

I thought about jacking it up and putting the rear on jack stands then bringing it up to speed to get the noise and I might be able to pinpoint the noise with a listening device.

yawn:doah: this sucks no truck for the winter months and I'm supposed to start a new Job in New Mexico. Kinda hard to drive my Corvette in the winter If I got caught in the snow I would be so screwed! :haha:

Wait, check the torque converter bolts and such first before going all out new motor...

The Torque converter bolts were torqued to 50 ft lbs and I use lock tight on them.

So I dont think its that.

I think its definatly inside the engine. The sound was there before I droped the trans, I just hoped it was a trans noise.

Did you check the flex plate for any cracks??? I just dont get why it wouldnt do it in idle when you rev it.

I saw no cracks on the flex plate when I looked it over I torqued the converter bolts. It can be a number of things but I'm leaning towards engine failure it has all the classic sounds of it being the engine it just gets worse when the RPMs are up.

Well I know that conecting rod bearings or piston slap could be the problem as well as main rod bearings.

Once its spinning faster you have more movement becasue of the bad bearings so thats what I think it is more than likely main bearings.

But I do not have enough time to yank the motor and rebuild it in 5 days.

I just don't see getting the block, crank and heads being done that fast by any machine shop for a new customer it would be a while before they were done.

Right now I would be better off swaping in a new engine.

Youre truck lifted? Pull the pan first. If you really think its a rod you'll be able to wiggle it. Especially if its knocking that bad. And it only happens under load, motor mounts good? Fan hitting the shroud?

Maybe its the exhaust It could be hitting the frame or something. Ill have to check it later I just parked it yesterday and gave up on it for the time being
